I don't get it. The people here are angry with Abuelita even before she tries to talk to them. And the little girl could have said "yucca" and "cassava" to the shopkeeper, and told the bus driver in the first place that Abuelita was getting out her change (and A. could have gotten out her change ahead of time!).
The people aren't glaring at the little girl. I just don't see this kind of racism anywhere I've lived. Especially against just one member of a brown-skinned family. Maybe it's seen more in Canada, from where the book comes?
Fortunately there are a lot more anti-racist books available, ones with more nuance and hope.
