- Alvilde Bridges was the only child of the Lt.-Gen. Sir George Thomas Molesworth Bridges, the Governor of South Australia from 1922 to 1927, and his wife, Janet Florence Menzies. She was married on January 9, 1933, to the Hon. Anthony Freskin Charles Hamby Chaplin, the future 3rd Viscount Chaplin. Lord and Lady Chaplin divorced in 1950, and she was married to James Lees-Milne in 1951. She was a widely respected gardening and landscape expert.
