About the Author

Robert Crumb was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on August 30, 1943. In 1962, he worked for the American Greetings Corporation. He first worked as a color separator before getting promoted to an illustrator position. He entered the public eye as an underground cartoonist during the late 1960s as show more the creator of Zap Comix. He created such characters as Fritz the Cat, Angelfood McSpade and Mr. Natural. He created cover art for Big Brother and the Holding Company's Cheap Thrills album. His numerous collections include Weirdo, Black and White, Big Ass Comics, People's Comics, Dirty Laundry Comics, The Crumb Family Comics, The R. Crumb Handbook, and The Book of Genesis. First publication of Crumb's 1963 Oggie and the Beanstalk narrative; "I just want to explain to the reader that I drew this story when I was nineteen years old and still a virgin... now I'm thirty years old and the book seems somewhat adolescent and immature to me."

The Book of Genesis Illustrated by R. Crumb by R. Crumb

Crumb illustrates in his inimitable style virtually every sentence in all 50 chapters of Genesis. He uses, mostly, the King James translation, and the quality of his artwork reflects the poetry of the translation. Unlike nearly all illustrated Bible stories I've seen (certainly not many), and from reading the Bible itself (again, I'm no expert), you get the feeling in Crumb's pictures that these are real people doing real things. The weight of tradition and religious silliness falls away when you look into these faces. Very enjoyable.… (more)
