Jordyn is retiring from the rodeo circuit to settle in a small town in North Carolina. Having grown up in foster care, this is her first real home, and she in determined to embrace the town and all it has to offer. The town, aptly named Noel, is really big on Christmas. In fact, they hold an annual Christmas contest, complete with several unusual games, and with the winner receiving a crown. The whole town takes these games very seriously, especially when it comes to most coveted game of all: the best Christmas tree. Jordyn just happens to now own the most perfect fir tree, a bonus she hadn’t expected when she bought her home. And neither did she know what complications it would bring into her life. This sweet rom-com is a perfect Christmas read. The characters are likable, the plot is interesting, and the ending is heartwarming. A sprinkling of humor adds to the enjoyment. If you listen to the audio version, I would recommend increasing the speed by 25%. Narrator Theresa Buchheister does a good job with the southern accents, but her rendition is much too slow.… (more)

I really enjoyed the first book in this series, "This Calder Range". It clipped along at a steady pace and held my attention. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same about the second book, "Stands a Calder Man". The majority of the novel moved along at a snail's pace. Benteen's son, Webb, is in love with Lilli, a young immigrant married to a much older man. They love each other; however, years are spent apart. It's towards the end of the novel, that the pace finally picks up speed. I did like the ending and I'm looking forward to reading the next book in this series. I just hope it move along at a faster pace.… (more)

Evergreen Christmas by Janet Dailey has Jordyn Banks, a barrel racer, and her horse, Star settling down in Noel, North Carolina. The story has a good premise, but I was not a fan of the final product. Noel sounded like a typical small town where gossip spread faster than syrup on a hot stack of flapjacks. I liked the idea of the twelve Christmas contests, but I found one offensive, and two others were unrealistic (can anyone eat over three dozen cookies in one sitting). There are a number of characters, and it can be hard to keep them straight especially Noel’s Nanas. I was not a fan of Tucker, who was a womanizer and proud of it. There were some sweet moments in the story that involved Roxie, Nate’s daughter. The romance was predictable and seemed to be instantaneous. I was surprised to discover that Evergreen Christmas is the first book in the Frosted Fir Ranch series. It felt more like the second or third book in a series. Unfortunately, I found Evergreen Christmas to be boring. I forced myself to finish Evergreen Christmas, but there was eye rolling involved, sighing, and a couple of good griefs.… (more)

"This Calder Range" by Janet Dailey is the first in the Calder Saga series. Even though there was great detail given to the beginning of the novel, it did not drag along. The last part of the novel picked up the pace. However, nothing was missed or overlooked. This historical fiction begins in September 1878 in the Montana Territory. I believe the actions of the characters to be true of that time in our history. As a reader, I wished that Benteen had been kinder and more caring to Lorna during the beginning and middle of the plot. However, it made the ending more intriguing and interesting. I would definitely recommend this novel to anyone that is interested in this era in our history. I'm looking forward to reading, "Stands A Calder Man", the second novel in this series.… (more)
