An example of High Victorian-think. I'd really like to know why the organizing idea of "progressive evolution" got such a hold on the 19th century mind. Seems like a worthy subject for investigation. After all, we still live with plenteous remnants of that paradigm. The author engages in some pretty serious mental gymnastics.
