Weirdly crap. Low in crime mystery, high on ancient details about Ancient Greece, yawn fest .

A solid murder mystery set against the backdrop of quite a vividly depicted ancient Athens. The main characters were well-rounded and engaging, and there were some great spontaneous interactions combined with some fitting historical and literary references. The resolution was a somewhat predictable, and I felt the denouement was a little rushed, but these did not detract from it being overall just a decent story. Nothing dazzling, but certainly an enjoyable read.

Two very separate strands to this very quick review: Doody's work is well researched and the book is well worth reading; HOWEVER, the paper used by HarperCollins is not much better than newsprint. I have several books in my collection printed during wartime austerity (and with the Government marking within to show it) which were obviously on poor quality paper. The work printed thereon is first rate, however.… (more)

Considering it as a detective story, the crime is complex and seems too much contrived in order to fit a literary reference. Considering it as a historical novel, ancient Greek culture is so alien that a good deal of information-dumping is necessary on subjects such as the rights of slaves and the functioning of religious cults. So, slightly hard going. MB 17-xii-2018
