Amazing story - a brilliant woman who never got credit for the crypto work she did that saved untold lives, while a-hole that hindered her work (aka J Edgar Hoover) claimed all the credit and got away with it.

I hate to quit an audiobook halfway through. I did like it up to then, so 3 stars. But to *really* like it, and to finish, I'd have to love cryptography. When the story reached WWII, my interest piqued, especially re. the Germans moving to South America even before the war, and spreading Naziism there. But if I want to enjoy a WWII drama, it will have to be another book.

Lots of readers gave this a high rating. Perhaps it's just not for me, or not at this time. I'm certainly glad to know who Elizabeth Friedman was and that she's finally getting the recognition she deserved. Looks like there's a movie -- I'll watch that.… (more)

I really enjoyed the story, and the telling. She's a compelling character, as are several of the other minor characters. And it was an interesting insight into a piece of recent history that still remains pretty obscure. It does lull a bit in parts, but overall it was a really great read.

I really enjoyed it, but wanted it to be more technical. I've been interested in codes & cryptography and especially WWI/WWII-era cryptography for a long time so I would have loved extra nerdy content. Maybe there'll be an extended edition sometime :)

It was a good read otherwise - I knew almost nothing about the Nazi spy networks in S America and it was fascinating!
