Just got this. Looks like an interesting book, but...
the title is misleading -- it's not what anyone would think was meant by "literary companion," instead it's what is sometimes called a "critical heritage"; that is, it's a collection of contemporary reviews from newspapers and periodicals, grouped by novel. One enormous and incredible omission is that there is no index or bibliography of any kind. Even just to see who the reviewers were, let alone what other writers or subjects they might have cited you have to go though the whole book page by page.… (more)
