Okay, so...

This one is hard for me to write. I honestly wanted to enjoy this book. It's about Canada! I love reading Canadian stories and about our history - it's one of my favourite things to do! Supporting Canadians is high up on my list in my ethics code. But this book... It just wasn't for me. It was very painful to read and I just couldn't get into the writing style. It was too slow and was written in a tone that just didn't work with me. It was such a disappointment for me because I really wanted to love and support this book.

This book follows the settlers on Manitoulin Island in the 1870s. Life can be bitter, cold and gossip-y on the island, with everyone trying to stay afloat financially and do their best with their families. Things go sour and south... (not literally, of course. It stays in Canada).

Overall, this book is slow but well written. It's just not a book for a reader like me!

One out of five stars.

I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads.
