Psychiatrist Frederic Flach's original work on ways of handling stress by building resilience rather than capitulating and perhaps falling into depression. Dr. Flach describes as process of "disruption," which is giving into stress instead of advoiding it. Then "reintegration," the process of putting the pieces of our world back together in a stronger structure. By doing this, the qualities of resilience, such as increased self-esteem, independence, will create an ability to emerge from shattering adversities with more equanimity.

Absolutely shocking what this girl had to go through (institutionalization for schizophrenia) because of a simple, overlooked problem.

Interesting book. I found myself rooting for troubled Rickie in her struggles with the darker periods of her life. The book gives some insight to what it is like to suffer from mental illness, which will be of interest to caregivers and loved ones. But it certainly doesn't have all the answers. In the end it seemed that Rickie made progress against her illness by simply deciding she didn't want to be categorized as a mentally ill person any more. Perhaps such a decision is more powerful than one would think!
