About the Author

Millard Fuller was the founder and president of Habitat for Humanity for 29 years prior to founding The Fuller Center for Housing in 2005. Fuller's business expertise and entrepreneurial drive made him a millionaire by age 29. Then, after a re-dedication of his life to family and to following God's show more path, Fuller and his wife, Linda, decided to sell their possessions and give their money to the poor. Following mission work in Africa, the Fullers founded Habitat for Humanity in Americus, Georgia, in 1976. Beyond the American Dream is the first of eleven books that Fuller wrote during his lifetime. He received numerous awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America's highest civilian award, and more than fifty honorary doctorate degrees for his outstanding leadership toward meeting the goal of eliminating poverty housing worldwide. show less

This is the story of building houses for poor people in south Georgia USA and in Africa. He tells how new communities filled people with hope and faith. It is a tale about how God enters situations in life and changes them.

An advertisement for Habitat for Humanity dressed up with some stories from the first decade or so of the organization. Provides some insight into the original vision, but otherwise not a ton to learn from this book. Some glaring blind spots as well - lots of talk about sacrifice and the spiritual reward of charity, but then highlights a story (page 104) where a volunteer talks about how he was treated like royalty in Zaire because his pay from Habitat made him the richest person in the village and the villagers 'made [him] a chief' and gave him a temporary son(?) to live with him and a boat with a dedicated driver. How is this living a simple life of charity?… (more)

The Excitement is Building" tells of the surging growth of Habitat for Humanity International. Hear a group that is sharing God's love in tangible ways today while offering hope for tomorrow. Here is the touching story of volunteers who make shelter a matter of conscience. They put themselves in the offering plate as they unselfishly build homes for and with complete strangers. Lives and dreams of giver and receiver alike are built as walls and prejudices among people and cultures are torn down.
