Ellie's Shabbat Surprise by Beveley Mach Geller
This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers.
I didn't care for the art style of this book; regardless, I'd recommend it, however, as I feel it could be a sweet, easy way to introduce children to cultural practices they might not be familiar with.

Ellie's Shabbat Surprise is an east to read children's book that is during the jewish sabbath. It is a very good introduction for children to learn about the jewish sabath traditions. The afterword and glossary give a broder understanding for questions about terms and the general time frame that the sabbath takes place. I would recommend this book to parents to help explain different religous tradtions to their children.

Ellie's Shabbat Surprise is a tender story about a young Jewish girl who is going to sing a special song at her Shabbat group and suddenly finds she has laryngitis . She has to decide just how she is going to handle this and I must say that her solution is creative.
Ellie was a sweet girl but I did not think the illustrations brought that quality out.
This book would be a good addition to a public library's childrens religion collection as it is informative and would introduce children to this part of the Jewish religion. The glossary of terms at the end was excellent and the afterward was a good explanation of Shabbat.… (more)

I found "Ellie's Shabbat Surprise" to be a delightful read! It is about a young Jewish girl, Ellie, and the special song she plans to sing for her Shabbat group. As it is such an important celebration, she finds that she has practiced a little too much, and has lost her voice. The book focuses on her fears of being laughed at and how she solves the problem. As someone not entirely familiar with the Jewish religion, I found the book to be educational, despite the _target age being preschool and lower primary. It has beautiful illustrations full of vivid colors, making it a wonderful picture book. The glossary in the back is very helpful for anyone not familiar with the Hebrew and Yiddish terms. Not only have I read this book, but I have lent it to several of my adult friends and they have also found it enjoyable.… (more)
