Peter Green is Dougherty Centennial Professor Emeritus of Classics at the University of Texas at Austin and Adjunct Professor of Classics at the University of Iowa. One of the best nonfiction books I've read. Yes, the martial elements are extremely granular, but Green manages to make it all compelling nonetheless.

Lucius Cornelius Sulla Felix (138–78 BC), was the first ruler of Rome to seize power through Civil War. He was a conservative, and found his backers around the Senate among the aristocratic group. His rule was bloody,and chiefly concerned with teaching the plebians their place. Peter greene does his best to lace all this in a favourable light. But the general effect is that to most modern eyes, this was an awful man doing vilent and ugly things to keep his own life prosperous. but it does read well, and is a considerable piece of Conservative propaganda.… (more)

I felt that the only way I could prepare for it would be to read more of the actual history. So many characters pass in and out of the story.
