Book 40 - Rene Gutteridge - Boo Hiss

And so I reach Book 3 of 4 of the wonderfully funny series set in Skary, Indiana. Where Gutteridge succeeds in her books is the characterisation of the main participants of the town...and how much we care what happens to all of them.

A series that started with us asking the question, “How much can someone change?” has moved on to asking...”What happens when everything seems to be changing around us ?” How do we deal with that ? Should we just move with that and ‘go with the flow’ ? Or should we continue to ask, “Why are things changing ?”

Don’t get me wrong, change can be good, change can refresh and more importantly change is what happens as life moves forward. But...we do need to ask the question...who is in charge of the change ?

Chaos abounds as a two-headed snake escapes in Skary and mishap after mishap causes chaos, hilarity and much needed reconnecting with the characters we have grown to love.

One of the characters who has changed the most throughout the series, Martin, the Mayor’s assistant, sums up change better than I ever could.

‘Martin said, “Let’s give God thanks for the chance to be part of this delightful journey. And may there be many more journeys to come.” ‘ Amen.

Book 7 - Rene Gutteridge - Boo

Helen has said to me many times that I should try the Boo series so finally decided in my book a week to have a go to this one.

My goodness, it is brilliant, so very funny and so on the nose for Christian fiction. It tells the tale of a horror writer who is saved but the little town he lives in has built up a tourist industry around his terrifying novels. Now that he is stopping writing them how will they cope ?

The characters are so real and the interaction between them will have you laughing out loud. I found myself matching up the characters to people I have met in real life...but that’s another story.

Heading in a completely different direction now - historical fiction with real life characters set in Roman times ‘Imperium’ by Robert Harris.

Book 49 - Rene Gutteridge - Boo Humbug

And so I reach the end of my visits to Skary, Indiana. Time to say goodbye to all the wonderful characters I have come to know this year.

You know, lockdown has been really hard, really tough for so many people, including the Arbuckles and some very close friends who are practically family. But..if it hadn’t been for lockdown I wouldn’t have started reading a book a week.

I probably wouldn’t have reached for Boo in the first place...way back at Book 7. I wouldn’t have got to know the wonderful people of this made up town. The mad Mayor who at one point in the series is wandering the town in a Hawaiian shirt and shorts...in Winter; the main couple - Wolfe and Ainsley - the heart of the town; the elderly Reverend who nearly loses his faith only to see it rekindled and shine out and to Alfred, who arrives in Book 1 as the self-centred greedy editor, who grows to understand what ‘Boo’ now has and the amazing ending which I won’t spoil here but let’s just say I shed a tear or six at the end.

If you are looking into the dark this Christmas remember the Light of the World is shining right back at you. Embrace each other and look forwards...don’t look back to the past...we aren’t going that way…

Book 33 - Rene Gutteridge - Boo Who

Way back near the beginning of Lockdown - Book 7 in fact, I read Boo, a funny, laugh out loud story about a horror novel writer who becomes a Christian. Filled with real characters, real situations and what happens to us when we are saved...how does it change us ?

Well, this is the sequel...what happens next ? What does being saved mean to us ? How does it impact on our lives ? Do we allow it to change us and what about those around us ?

Another well realised story with perhaps not as many laugh out loud moments as the first but some truly poignant moments...losing a character from book one who was clearly the backbone of a community and they didn’t even know it.

The book is about loves lost and love strengthened...love for family and love for friends...more important God’s love...how He gave up his son for us and how some of the characters within the town of Skary took Him to their hearts.

Enriching...emotional but an absolute joy to read. Give your loved ones an extra hug tonight...have a great week ❤️
