A brow-beaten lawyer's life is falling apart and now he's under suspicion for his father's murder. The writing was clunky especially the sex and too much time was spent describing minute details in the pivotal childhood memory that made the M/C who he was. The murder was easily solved by the reader. Doesn't say much for the book does it? However, the action was well written enough to keep me intrigued and find out how the side stories ended.

I won this book from First reads a couple of years ago and I'm only now getting around to reading it. But I'm glad I finally did. This was one of those books that you don't want to put down and I read it all the way through in just a few days (which is pretty fast for me).

I didn't love the writing, but the story was exciting and I felt compelled to find out what happened. Warning for my sensitive friends: this book has some pretty graphic violence in it. But all in all, I was glad I had the chance to read it and it made a nice change of pace for me.

"Darkness is a cancer of the human heart

This surprised me be being near impossible to put down. Even though there were parts I thought were a little too easy - I do love that much of it was not. The characters - Katherine, Alyssa, Johnny, Jack - all of them were well done and hard to read. I liked that none of the characters were squeaky clean but they all had their dark side or tipping point.

I like that I feel like the reactions from the police, procedure and reactions were realistic and didn't feel fake, bumbling or ridiculous.

I am looking forward to reading another book by this author.

"There is no 'normal' in The Hush. There is only story and magic."

This was a wonderful book 2 but very different from the first book. It follows the life of Johnny and Jack but also those that were around them in the last one. It throws in new characters but none of them are as big as The Hush is.

Although I loved the dynamic of all the pieces and the players in the story - I found that I loved the lore and the "Other" that's in the story, but I have to admit that the set up of all the characters bogged down at times. This book took me far too long to read because it felt slow in a lot of spots.

Finishing this one makes me appreciate even more the story, the characters and the relationships built in book 1. So glad I continued the series!

Why didn't I save this book for my holidays !! This is just the sort of book I love to read on a sun lounger with time on my hands and no housework or work to distract me.....

My first John Hart novel and thanks to my goodread friends whose reviews pointed me in the right direction with this one. Redemption Road is a novel with an intriguing storyline, great characters and a dark and sinister element to the story.
There is a lot of action going on in this book and while I listened to this one on audio I had to switch half ways through to kindle version as I found it difficult to keep track of the story however this was a case of me and not the narrator. Heart's writing is flawless and the man has a talent for stroytelling, I loved the constant twists and turns in the Novel and felt there was never a lull in the action. Characters are well drawn and some are dark and gritty but each one has his/her story.

I did however guess the identify of the killer very early on in the novel but it didn't take from my enjoyment of the story.

A dark and gritty read, with serious themes involving, rape religion and torture and and reminded me of books like [b:Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter|7948230|Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter|Tom Franklin|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1292689648s/7948230.jpg|11552215] and [b:Bull Mountain|23398919|Bull Mountain|Brian Panowich|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1417982638s/23398919.jpg|42955428].

Like many thrillers, this requires the reader to suspend their disbelief to some degree, but I had no trouble doing so, thanks to its readability and pure entertainment factor. It's long-ish but read very quickly. I appreciate how Hart doesn't just use plot to move things forward - his characters are interesting and well-developed. I look forward to reading more by him.

This is a book that you will not want to put down once you start reading it. Because of other obligations, I had to put the book down; although, I certainly didn't want to. do so.
Adrian Wall is being released from prison after 13 long years for a crime that one detective (Elizabeth Black) did not think he had committed. A young boy Gideon sneaks out of his house, hops a train and goes to a bar where most released prisoners stop. Gideon believes that Wall killed his mother and now he wants revenge.
The book has enough mystery to keep one guessing until the very end; there's possible romance and enough crookedness to keep everyone intrigued.

this was a well written mystery, particularly considering it was a first novel. Characters were somewhat developed, plot had some twists and turns. I must say , though, that I didnt particularly enjoy it. It was noir, which I usually like, but I found it difficult to like the protagonist. spoilers follow-
His dad kills his mom, he hushes it up- ok
he watches the girl get raped, he's a child, what do I expect him to do
he cheats on his wife- well -its ok- she was cheating far worse
he gets a dog , even though he knows that his last dog was forced to live entirely in the backyard by his trampy wife
his friend the private detective brings a couple of women along to their meeting, seemingly so they can sleep with them, even though he knows the guy is married, again, he knows him so seemingly something he was open to in the past?
he marries his wife rather than the woman he loves, but keeps the other woman hanging on and drops by for emotional support and sex when he wants it
the one person who is really nice to him, the doctor, he borrows his car so he can leave the area, therefore opening up the doctor to a charge of abetting
Supposedly he loves his sister, I guess that's something

Three stars means I Liked It.. yeah, that' about right. This will be a fun summer movie when it's optioned. The characters are all right (though the women are really really really one-dimensional, and worse in the audiobook voicing); the plot is pretty predictable, but the pacing is fantastic. It's enjoyable with these limitations.

I tried, I really did. And based on the almost universal positive reviews, I'm in the minority. But I really don't get the fuss about this book. The characterization was dreadful, so full of stereotypes that not a single character felt real to me - the passive and childlike, drug-addled mother, the abusive and skeevy boyfriend-of-mother who is also the rich man who owns the town, the cop who is tormented by the one unsolved case, etc. etc. etc. There's even a character who has all the hallmarks of the Magical Negro.

Audiobook, borrowed from my public library via Overdrive. Scott Sowers gives an awkwardly stilted performance as narrator. DNF at 18%, or about 2 2/3 hours in.

DNF….the writing is fine, easy to read. The characters are awful and make no sense. Couldn’t finish.

Here's what I wrote in 2008 about this read: "A very quick read while traveling on business. A southern novel full of southern families with their typical skeletons and long-ago glory days."
