Our nonprofit puttered along for twenty plus years with a basic bookkeeping system, then we were in a position to take a loan and purchase a building. Wow did our need for a higher level of bookkeeping expand as the ideas for fundraisers poured in from our community. Our board needed help beyond the scope of the typical NOLO book, and we came across Bruce Hopkins. We read five of his words books at that time, and the two that especially stand out are Charitable Giving Law Made Easy and Nonprofit Law for Religious Organizations: Essential Questions and Answers. Good overview of nonprofit governance issues and applicable law and standards.

Most important part of this book on fundraising - a review of the different organizations and standards for nonprofit financial accountability and governance. Pick a standard and stick with it. This isn't the place to make up your own accounting system.
