Ba-chan the Ninja Grandma: An Adventure with Little… by Sanae Ishida

Kunoichi and her little brother are bored during their summer vacation, so their parents send them to their grandma's secret island, where they have adventures and practice all kinds of nin-jutsu (nin=ninja, jutsu=skills). A smallish, square trim size and a gentle watercolor palette is inviting.

Sumo Shapes (Little Sumo) by Sanae Ishida

This was a fun way to learn about Japanese culture. It’s a baby book that looks at shapes. It gives the English word and the Japanese word both written in English and written in Japanese. Each shape is represented somehow within the sumo culture. At the end there are other important Japanese words and cultural items to learn about. Overall, this is a great baby book fun for rereading over and over again.

Sewing Happiness: A Year of Simple Projects for… by Sanae Ishida

nonfiction; craft blogger memoir/sewing (too much stress autoimmune health crisis, losing job and finding path to recovery and happiness). The selection of projects--intended to be simple and nonintimidating enough for beginners or even children--are actually quite nice (suitable for yourself or for gift giving, though I wasn't motivated quite enough to make any of them myself) reminding me of Lotta Jansdotter, except with Japanese touches--including a nice intro to Sashiko embroidery (which could provide another opportunity for slow, therapeutic sewing). I also enjoyed reading her story of regaining her feet after going through a very rough patch (healthy vegetables, lots of walking, and stress reduction), and also growing to appreciate imperfections and promoting body acceptance in raising her young daughter as well as on her blog.… (more)
