Numerous scholars make the case for the place of Emily Dickinson in the pantheon. The author is a professor of English and well-immersed in American literature, the focus of this work. While he includes biographical materials, his purpose is to show affinities with other writers. For example he does not touch upon her "religious" dogmas, leaving that to other works. Of course, the other literary lights he exposes are largely Unitarian: Stowe, Hawthorne, Emerson, Whitman, Frost. The author also analyses associations with the "metaphysical" Puritan Congregationalist, Edward Taylor, Anne Bradstreet, and Jonathan Edwards, the missionary to the Indians.… (more)
