Necromancer, Shaesarenna Nightven is running out of time. The shackles he placed on the demon, Izen are breaking and he doesn't have long to banish him before he will be free to terrorise the land. But necromancy requires human contact to ease the drain of his life force and if Shae wants to reach Lyrisenia without dying, he's going to need a companion.

Paladin of the Radiant Order, Arthur Davorin is in exile. After accidentally betraying his order by falling in love with and trusting the wrong person, Arthur is travelling the lands, blessing the lands and the people as penance. When Shae approaches him about travelling together, Arthur agrees thinking it will be straightforward. But nothing is straightforward when dealing with demons.

This was okay. It was kind of bland. The world building was pretty thin and the plot was sketchy but the characters were alright for the most part. Shae was a bit whiny but that was kind of understandable with all his trauma. Dead parents. Being hated by everyone for making a decision as a kid who just wanted his parents back. Arthur on the other hand kind of irritated me. He was so oblivious and naive to the hatred and ways of the world. And his abandoning Shae when he met up with his buddies again was just bleh. The romance between them was sweet if not particularly substantial. When they were together at least. As I said, I didn't love Arthur deciding not to follow.

My biggest complaint was Shae's whole overpowered necromancer schtick. I had no problem with him being overpowered - but it was irritating when he kept saying he needed to be defending and then proceeding to whip out massive spells that killed everything. He might have needed human touch but he didn't need defending.

It was an easy enough read though with an alright story, if not a particularly memorable one. 2 stars.

Sweet and uncomplicated. Emotionally a little unrealistic, but who cares? The characters are competent and lovely, the story is simple, but engaging, and the love is charming.

Nice. This is not overly complicated, relatively light- hearted (considering the subject matter of dead bodies and demons). Characters are nice, and they are sweet together.

This is a fantastic opposites-attract romance, and has one of the best-done separations I've ever read. The world is great without ever being tedious. I am impressed. Book 2 comes out in December.

CW: self-harm for blood magic; many deaths.
