Voltaire in the role of investigator of murders is not entirely convincing. The year is 1733 and he is obsessed with getting his Lettres Philosophiques published, and we learn more about French censorship and how to evade it than we want to. The language is too modern, too flippant, and the humour doesn't always work.

Not as good as Van Gulik's, but not bad at all.
