Littell is one of my favorite authors. I've come to expect a great story from him. This was not a great story, barely meh.

Former CIA agent Lemual Gunn has been drummed out of the agency, and is working as a private detective in the southwest when he's hired by a beautiful young woman. She's running her father's bail bond operation, and someone she's bonded has skipped out on $125,000; if she can't find him, she'll be out the money. Gunn, with her along, goes in search of the perp, and it leads to witness protection program and a small town on the California/Nevada border, run by two competing mob families. Good characterization and sense of time and place, a good ending.… (more)

In 1934, Russian poet Osip Mandelstam wrote a poem called The Stalin Epigram which was a scathing indictment of Stalin. It's a pretty amazing little poem. Littell tells Mandelstam's story, along with the stories of some of those in his circle and how the epigram affected them. Many did not want to hear it, justly afraid of what would happen. Littell does a great job of etching the horror of Stalin's regime, and making Mandelstam and his circle human. A pretty gripping read.

The story of aCIA agent who has worked on the Middle East during the Cold War. He had several false identities called legends. He now presents one of his legends as a private eye and is asked to g find the missing husband of a young woman living in Israel. She needs a divorce so she would too free to marry again. The narrative jumps between many legends in the protagonist’s background. In the end the CIA is manipulating the downfall of the Soviet Union.
