It's true that reading the first book is unnecessary to enjoying this second one, but why would you want to miss a great book? It feels like she's channeling Tamora Pierce, but her style is still her own. Excellent stories, characters, powerful females in a historic setting.

Great island setting, rich characterization, compelling story that was tightly woven. Well done.

"Every wish demands a price."

Such a fun little adventure. Sea dragons and the power of their eggs, dragonfruit. Rarely found, rarely hatched, special dragonfruit will cure any mistake or ailment - but for a price.

I really liked the characters. Sam was so easy to like. He was honor bound and so loyal to his mom. I loved his mark and his keeping of Fetu.

Hanalei was a strong, tenacious voice. She's survived poisoning and survived hiding because of the secret she has. I loved her same loyalty but also her curiosity and love.

This had a great feel of a fable or fairytale. The writing was so easy to read, the read so fast, and the story had me hooked from the start and I wanted to know where it would go. Even if you can see some of the twists coming, the reveals were so rewarding and this was such a feelgood read. Sometimes we need those, too.

And THIS COVER! It's just gorgeous!

I had no idea. Born and raised in Oregon, you never think of the Spanish Flu and how it hit the west coast. I read about all over the world, but never specifically my home town and how it was affected. Shutting down schools and canceling all events.

it was so inspiring to read about the few that really rose to the challenge.… (more)
