Good bio on director Howard Hawks who was one of the few directors who did films in many genres, i.e. gangster (Scarface 1932), musical (Gentleman Prefer Blondes 1953), war (Air Force 1943), Crime (The Big Sleep 1946), comedy (Bringing Up Baby 1938 and His Girl Friday 1940), biography (Sergeant York (1941), and Western (Red River 1948 and Rio Bravo 1959), among many others. However, Hawks as a person was an engima and you really don't get to know a lot about how he thought. He also had a habit of recycling film plots or pieces of one film into other, most notably in the case of Rio Bravo which morphed into El Dorado which morphed into Rio Lobo. A good biography though with a detailed filmography.… (more)

One of the best biographies I've ever read; McCarthy gives an illuminating portrait of my favorite film director of all.
