A charming anthology of short stories of Christmas romance. 9 stories in total, each with its own plot, not tied together. I had my favorite and my least favorite, but all were enjoyable and an easy read. A couple of the authors are new to me and it's always a pleasure to try out a new style and discover a new author to follow.

Between the stories we have a couple of house parties, second chances, love at first sight, lots of snow and a couple of Cinderellas.

For me Ella Quinn, Caroline Linden, Barbara Monajem, and Browen Evans especially hit the mark with heartwarming holiday stories. One author gave up a convoluted mess with unlikable characters. The rest were enjoyable stories with thoughtful plots making classic holiday romances. My recommendation is this presentation is a delightful way to enjoy Regency romance and the Christmas season.

Edwina White, left a poor widow seeks employment as a governess in the north of England. Only to find her employer is Richard Ballister, who seduced her in the past.
Add to this a haunted house and a curse, the result is an enjoyable read

Plot

Camden Folk was once a notorious rake, known for bedding many women. Now he's consumed by desire for only one woman; young widow Frances Burdett. Yuletide festivities at his country estate seem to be the perfect time to seduce her.

After Frances' brief marriage, she vowed to never be sworn to another man. A kiss under the mistletoe reignites desires that she thought long forgotten, but can she give in to the passion without losing her heart?

My thoughts

This story was interesting, but I found the character of Camden got on my nerves quite often. He's very forceful with Frances, especially once he discovers that Frances doesn't like to be kissed. It seems less like he's seducing her and more like he's forcing her to be seduced. She seems to give in to it eventually however. While I enjoyed the idea of the story and the magical element of the house hobgoblin, I can only give this story three stars, due to irritating characters.

The Christmas Knot, by Barbara Monajem, was originally published in November of 2015. Subtitled A Slightly Gothic Regency Mystery Novella, it certainly is true. I my opinion the mystery/ghost story was the best part of the book. You have to suspend your knowledge of Regency romance novels to enjoy the story, I found it best to do so & not nitpick the details.

Our heroine is a down on her luck widow. She's desperate to escape horrid relatives & the threat of the poor house. I believe her circumstances but not her willingness to do anything, including prostitute herself. That's going a bit far. She answers an advert for a governess & until she sees him, doesn't realize who he is. A stretch since she grew up in the area & was engaged to him. Didn't she know anything at all about his family? Maybe just a last name? Edwina is ok but I didn't become invested in her plight.

Richard is no more likeable than Edwina. He's ok but not my idea of a hero. His wife is dead & he's raising twins by himself, in a haunted house. I believe he has no idea she's going to be his new governess, he's desperate for anyone to show up. The instant attraction is also believable, you never forget your first love. He loves his children & is involved in their lives, that's always a good thing.

The mystery is what I liked. The house being haunted, a scavenger hunt, bumbling treasure hunters, and a long ago murder. Terrific plot and well done. This book was free on Amazon so I took a chance & don't regret it.
