Completely authoritative treatment of the subject. Does an excellent job of mapping out the various strands of postwar conservatism (libertarianism, anti-communism, and traditionalism) that have taken a backseat to neoliberalism in the latter part of the 20th century. I enjoyed this book far more than I thought I would upon picking it up. Scholarly, yet readable.

So Mr. Hoover disliked Franklin Roosevelt, believed that Roosevelt schemed to get us into World War II, and knew that Roosevelt had a lot of Communists and fellow travelers in his Administration. It seems to me that the judgment of history has overtaken the purpose of Hoover's unfinished "magnum opus". Surely the last two points are now pretty much commonplaces. Somehow it seems a little sad to think of Hoover diligently documenting all this for so long.
