The 43 folio-sized fascicules, republished in eight hard-back volumes, are arguably the most complete published corpus of Greek coins of any collection anywhere, and an often cited reference for Greek and Roman provincial coins. Most of the 22 thousand coins illustrated on the 583 plates in these volumes are actually photos of plaster casts, and the quality of the photos is only generally adequate. The SNG format is geared to the display of a maximum number of coins (essentially all in their collection, including many duplicates), and not scholarship. As these works were published initially from 1942 to 1977, their coin descriptions are generally good, but not detailed, and they obviously lack references to more recent reference works.… (more)
