'"Land, Spirit, Power"...is intended, in part, as a response and a contribution to the important discussions taking place today around the questions of cultural identity, from the specific perspective of First Nations artists. These discussions, as expressed through works of art and literature, have taken the form of a critical and theoretical discourse that contests and attempts to broaden the traditionally accepted parameters of art, while giving expression to cultural difference.'

“A Darkening Vision,” the title of CUAG’s recent retrospective of Leslie Reid’s paintings, refers not to the Ottawa artist’s palette, but to the intensifying feeling in her work of the tenuous of life. In her catalogue essay, curator Diana Nemiroff traces the evolution of Reid’s treatment of light and space, observing that although Reid’s extraordinarily subtle paintings of the landscape are grounded in observation, their objectivity is underpinned by the preliminary photographs that allow her to contemplate at a remove the sensations and emotions evoked by a particular place.… (more)
