(more)

Very good scriptural reference work focused exclusively on Paul and his Apostolic Letters. Drawing from protestant scholars (intentionally excluding most Roman Catholic work) the encyclopedic entries are well written although they seem to highlight disagreements between academics themselves. The overall sense from reading this work is that Paul is engaged in defending authentic Christian identity from pagan Greeks who would syncretize it with Gnostic concepts and amoral values for personal gain. Interesting.

Bibliographical citations at the end of each entry is appreciated by this reader. I use this often in preparing for talks.

NO OF PAGES: 1038 SUB CAT I: Paul SUB CAT II: Reference SUB CAT III: DESCRIPTION: "The Dictionary of Paul and His Letters" presents: - over 200 in-depth articles; - hundreds of cross-references; - extensive bibliographies; - subject index; - Pauline scripture index; - many topics not found even in multi-volume Bible encyclopedias; - Bible-encyclopedia-length articles on subjects related to Pauline literature and theology; - the contributions of over 100 evangelical scholars from North America, the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Asia. No other single reference work presents as much information focused exclusively on Pauline theology, literature, background and scholarship. In a field that recently has undergone significant shifts in perspective, the "Dictionary of Paul and His Letters" offers a summa of Paul and Pauline studies. In-depth articles focus on individual theological themes (such as Christology, eschatology and the death of Christ), methods of interpretation (such as rhetorical criticism and social-scientific approaches), background topics (such as early Catholicism, the center of Paul's theology, and Paul and his interpreters since F. C. Baur). Separate articles are also devoted to each of the Pauline letters, to hermeneutics and to preaching Paul today.NOTES: Purchased from CBD SUBTITLE: A Compendium of Contemporary Biblical Scholarship… (more)

Had this book as an assigned text, I found it a well organized, informative book, but still a text book.
