Gah, the last line is just as heart-wrenching in text as in the show....

4.5 Stars. This reads much more like an autobiography than a self-help or motivational book. It's full of anecdotes and observations from the colorful life that is Shonda Rhimes. Her writing style is as exciting as her TV dramas, and I really wish I was a character on one of her shows so she could write me into life-changing adventures. The premise of her Year of Yes is simple, but also meaningful and empowering. It has definitely made me question my own life choices and decide the track that I want to lay.… (more)

As a huge fan of Grey's Anatomy, I picked up this book wanting a closer look into its creator's life. I got that, and then some! My favorite bits were the behind-the-scenes looks at Rhimes' most popular TV shows. It's clear she adores writing, loves what she does, and has a lot of respect for her characters and her viewers.

That said, this is ultimately a self-help book disguised as a memoir. I loved the concept of her wanting to say a big loud "YES!" to life, but at the same time, she focused a lot on how often she ended up saying "No." While she often reiterated the importance of jumping feet-first into new opportunities, I wish she'd spent time talking about when to say yes to something that scares you and when to say no to something that's just not good for you, and how to discern between the two.

Some chapters, particularly those describing her panic attacks over going on stage or meeting famous people, dragged on and felt overly wordy. Others, though—like the one on the Mommy Wars—were breathtakingly relatable and engaging.

Overall, I enjoyed this. While it may not have answered every question I had, it still provided plenty of food for thought. It's an honest, vulnerable, and empowering look at a woman who decides to change her life from the inside out. This book will absolutely resonate with fans of Rhimes' work, as well as with those looking to embrace a more courageous way of living.
