Either on Dear Author or Smart Bitches-- Someone said they would read the most predictable of plots if the characters and the relationship were great. His Lady Mistress is most definitely predictable-- but for the first third of the book, I loved the interaction between Max and Verity so much that I overlooked all of the downsides. I'm a sucker for that old standby plot line where two characters just can't seem to fight the incredible, almost subconscious attraction to each other.

However, as the story wore on, the old "simpering virgin who constantly makes bad choices" trope started to get on my nerves. The "alpha who overreacts to everything" got annoyingly repetitive. The constant misunderstandings keeping the two apart just served to drive me nuts, rather than have me root for the happy ending.

Good, but not great.

Yesss the angst, the downtrodden, selfless heroine, this was right up my alley even if it didn’t quite cater to my usual taste in tropes. I really enjoy this author!

Not as angsty as His Lady Mistress, but then what book is? Still, a good read!

While this did play nicely into one of my favorite tropes - abused/traumatized heroine - it fell a bit short on my personal rating scale because of course the sainted hero would love and accept the heroine's child, and be nothing but loving and supportive about her trauma! While I love a hero who protects and heals rape victims, there was little of that in this storyline. Still enjoying this series though! (3.5 stars)
