Continuing its tradition of producing a fall anthology focusing on all things magical and paranormal, Zebra presents a varied quartet of historical novellas that range in time from medieval Ireland to the American Gay Nineties. Although the writing quality varies, most of the stories in this collection are intriguing and diverse enough to capture reader interest. For instance, Ellen Archer's "Wishes" is a tale of a beautiful, spoiled debutante who learns a valuable lesson through the magic of an ancient coin; Stephanie Bartlett's "Smoke and Mirrors" features a skeptical young San Francisco newspaper woman who ends up helping a spiritualist-and a ghost-solve a murder.

Dark Seductions: Tales of Erotic Horror
Not ALL the stories in this compendium are great - but isn't that the case with most short story collections?

While the book holds itself true to the "Dark Seductions" title, one story in particular stood out for me: "Playing the Victim" by Scott Ciecin.

All-in-all, it gets a "A" for effort and a "C" for actual execution. I give it 4 stars for the sheer fact that I discovered a very important part of myself in one of those stories...
