I thought this would be a book about Bowie's time in Berlin, his experiences of the city and its people, but it's actually an in-depth breakdown of the making of his songs during a certain period, which happens to be when he was in Berlin. This would be a great book for fans of Bowie who are also fans of the podcast Song Exploder, but too boring and pedantic for anyone else.

Bowie represents a living enigma of an icon who transformed himself several times - his image, his sound. Chroncile of a productive period in his life. And a fascinating exploration of how he recorded his Berlin trilogy (_low_, _"heroes"_ and _lodger_).

Finally, there's a book which provides very close critical readings of really good recordings instead of the most popular or most peculiar. For fans of "The Thin White Duke" this is totally revelatory.
