Short biography
Mary Wright Sewell was born to an English Quaker family in Sutton, Suffolk. In 1819, she married Isaac Sewell, with whom she had two children, Anna and Philip. Her husband went bankrupt after their son was born in 1822. Mrs. Sewell taught her children at home and wrote poetry and stories for children to help support the family.
They lived at Lancing in West Sussex (where Anna probably developed her love of horses) and at Blue Lodge in Wick, near Bath, before settling at Old Catton near Norwich. Mrs. Sewell's work was popular in her day, and her 1865 book Mother's Last Words was a bestseller. Today she is best known today as the mother of Anna Sewell, the author of Black Beauty.
