Francis Joseph "Frank" Sheed, also known by his initials, F. J. Sheed, earned a law degree in his native Sydney, Australia and moved to England, where he worked with the Catholic Evidence Guild as a writer and public speaker. With his wife, Maisie Ward, he formed the Sheed & Ward Publishing House in London in 1926. They later came to America with their children Wilfrid and Rosemary, and settled in Jersey City.
