Jacque Stevens

What is most annoying to me about Jacque's books is that they keep getting better. Why is this a problem? Well, I like to collect signed copies of my favorites, but then she goes and does it again. Oh well. I suppose there are worse problems to have.

The Shoeless Prince was amazing. A miller's third son is in love with a princess. Understandably so, as she is a most lovely, down-to-earth princess. Unfortunately, all he inherits when his father dies is a magical cat. At least, the son believes the cat is magical. The father is probably mocking him a little, even in death by calling their cat magical. Fortunately for the boy, the cat also believes he is magical...he just can't remember why he thinks that.

And so the story goes. There are a lot of hijinks. Mostly the fault of the cat. Mostly on purpose, but can you really blame a cat for not being able to think something through in the manner of a human? Despite that, all of the characters are lovely...even the cat.

I don't want to spoil anything, but it's great, you'll love it, read it. I am already looking forward to reading it again.

I absolutely LOVED Cry Wolf (the first book in the series), so I was very excited to start on this one. The writing style was similar to Cry Wolf (see my review for it here), and both of the books could definitely be considered as novella-length.

Good things first. Howl is still amazing and super adorable and now we get to see quite a bit from his POV! There were also quite a few good action scenes, but nothing too graphic or violent.

I listened to the audiobook version of Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing, so reading the book instead of listening to it probably would’ve produced a different experience for me. With the audiobook, though, the story felt extremely short. Granted, I did listen to it at 1.5 speed, but that’s what I did with Cry Wolf and with every other audiobook, too, and I didn’t really have that same feeling with any of the rest. So if I were you, I wouldn’t speed this one’s audiobook up.

Also, with this one, there was a third narrator (one for Belle’s POV, one for Jean’s, and one for Howl’s), but I ended up not liking Howl’s narrator too much. It wasn't that he was bad at reading audiobooks, but I seriously think his voice was too deep for Howl. I really loved the way Howl sounded when it was Belle’s POV (with the female narrator speaking), but Howl’s narrator just made things sound kind of cheesy and unrealistic. The writing was amazing, but the narration wasn't always. I was left wishing there were more scenes with Belle and Howl together.

Speaking of that, I think mostly this book is leading up to book three. Belle and Howl barely have any interaction together in this one. For most of the book, Belle is trapped with Jean However, there’s still plenty of humor on Howl’s part for those of you who love that like me, and the book is still plenty interesting!

Overall, this is a series that I would recommend. Book 2 wasn't perfect, but that’s okay!

I’ve been so afraid to write this review but I’m finally doing it! I hope I can do this book at least some justice with my ramblings because Cry Wolf was SO good!!

Okay, I will be honest with you and say that I wasn't sure I was going to enjoy this one going into it at first. I think I’ve read too many books where I get myself hyped up but then they fall short so I think my mind subconsciously became cautious about having high expectations so that I wouldn’t be disappointed if I read a book and it turned out bad (if that makes sense?). Maybe I could even be pleasantly surprised if I went into a book with low expectations and it slightly exceeded them? But woahhhhh, this book just blew me away!!! It was everything I could’ve hoped for and more, too!

On to the real review! First of all… okay, so I’m not supposed to say this yet, but Howl was just SOO adorable!!! I loved him so much!!! So much I could jump up and down and hug him if I saw him in real life!!! I’m not kidding, he’s amazing!!! I’m so, so sorry I ever doubted you, Howl!

Ahem. Um, where was I?... (*mentally tells myself to get a grip*) Okay, so starting this book, the first few chapters were a bit slow for me and I was a bit worried about blanking off since I had the audiobook version, but good thing I eventually got totally drawn into the story (I think that happened when you-know-who-if-you’ve-read-the-book died).

I still don’t know what to think about Isabelle / Belle, but she is certainly funny! I think my favorite part of the book was her and Howl just quipping back and forth at each other (Howl is so funny too!) And I love the way the audiobook-lady (audiobook reader? reader of the audiobook?) does Howl’s voice!!

The *twist* to the story was bone-chilling! I don’t wanna say anything more than that but I didn’t anticipate it at all! And I like it that way too!… (more)

For by far the longest book Jacque has written thus far - I have hopes it will happen again - this was epic!

Tayvin and Drynn attempt to return home only to find that things are different than they remembered. This time, Tayvin is captured by the Drow, and Drynn and Kol must find a way to fix things as the Drow attempt to turn Tayvin against everything he loves.

I loved Kol so much in this book. Kid is funny! There were also more dragonets, half-elves, and other fantastic characters. For a fantasy world, the characters feel so real. I'm glad the series isn't over and look forward to their continuing adventures.
