This is a book about the life-long influence of Claude Lorrain's work on that of William Turner. This influence tends, in the main, to be on Turner's more passive scenes, though it is surprising to learn that there is a clear influence on the industrial work 'Rain, Steam and Speed' as well as on some of the later, more abstract pieces. The book deepens the understanding of the relationship of Lorrain's classical compositions to Turner's play with the metaphysics of light.

God, I wish I had been able to see this exhibition in person. Poring over these plates, even with a magnifying glass, can provide only so much pleasure. Kind of like only being able to smell the liver while it's cooking.

Exquisite - and has some very penetrating text.
