There were some good stories collected here, but nothing that stuck with me for very long. Even now writing this, mahjong finished the book just a couple weeks ago, I don't remember much about any of the stories particularly.

3 bones!!!!

Surprisingly good. Of course, these stories are from the 50s, not the 30s, so I should've expected some thoughtfulness. In all these pulp stories, the human characters are types, yes, but they do show some individual depths. Also, I think maybe Wollheim & I are more in sympathy than other editors and I. In any case:

*Obligation* takes place on a wet Venus, but the setting isn't specifically important. It's about a group of human pioneers who meet a sort of scout, and what the scout does as it first violates the 'Prime Directive' and then tries to make amends. I will look for more by Dee.

*The Sound of Bugles* looks at the different methods humans and Martians accomplish things. The latter seems to have achieved a sort of Paradise, and the author asks wistfully if humans ever can. I will look for more by Williams.

*Ogre* has truly alien aliens, both vegetable and mechanical. Adventure, melancholy, humor, and insight all work together to enlighten and entertain. I will continue to look for more by Simak, one of my favorite authors.

*Assignment on Pasik* reminds me just a bit of [b:The Word for World is Forest|276767|The Word for World is Forest|Ursula K. Le Guin|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1283091038l/276767._SY75_.jpg|3256815]. Leinster didn't use all his talent in this little adventure, though, and some bits are just a bit silly. Still, I'm glad I read it and will continue to look for more by Leinster.

*The Rull* apparently depends on a belief in the power of Pavlovian conditioning and on ESP. I say apparently, because I was confused about most of what was going on. I do like the theme, though, that enemies must never give up trying to communicate the desire for mutual understanding and peace, even in the midst of a no-holds-barred war. I am not interested in more by Van Vogt (at least based on this sample).

Now, it's not actually on openlibrary yet. But I expect it will be, so this is the best tag for it.

* "Goat Song" (Poul Anderson) Too [L]iterary for me.
* "The Man Who Walked Home" (James Tiptree, Jr.) Good, but I just read it last week.
* "Oh, Valinda!" (Michael G. Coney) On another planet, Earthmen are the advanced race, making decisions about what technology to give to the natives... who are the stage of development we were in the 1970s.... I will look for more by [a:Michael G. Coney|356458|Michael G. Coney|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1208191683p2/356458.jpg]
* "The Gold at the Starbow's End" (Frederik Pohl) What is more important to study than physics & maths? Excellent story if read with care. But the time dilation effect seems off; does it to you?
* "To Walk a City's Street" (Clifford D. Simak) Not his typical work, but a short sharp idea-piece.
* "Rorqual Maru" (T.J. Bass) Lots going on, would take many authors a novel to work out, but I've never heard of [a:T.J. Bass|812364|T.J. Bass|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/m_50x66-82093808bca726cb3249a493fbd3bd0f.png] so I don't know if I can get more.
* "Changing Woman" (W. Macfarlane) Very cool. I wonder if [a:W. Macfarlane|973643|W. Macfarlane|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png] is a woman.
* "'Willie's Blues'" (Robert J. Tilley) Ode to jazz & musicians, in a time-travel gimmick.
* "Long Shot" (Vernor Vinge) Intelligent ship on an interstellar mission. Well-done and interesting. Should have been the last story.
* "Thus Love Betrays Us" (Phyllis MacLennan) I much prefer Longyear's "Enemy Mine" and wish this wasn't how the book ended. Blech.

It seems that SF was getting more creative, literary, experimental, at about this time. Wollheim says as much in his introduction. I'm less interested in the pulp shorts of the 70s, and so is he... I may or may not read further in this Annual Best (this is the oldest that I have access to atm.)
