Helen Corbyn is a friend of Louisa Winterbourne. She was engaged to Pater Mirabeau, who was supposed to fignt a duel with Helen's brother, William, a calvery Colonel and hero of the Peninsula. Helen knew that her brother was supposed to fight a duel, although not that Peter was the intended opponent. In her effort to stop the duel, she meets up with Peter, who is riding there in his landau. At her pleading, he agrees to let her ride ahead and see if she can stop her brother.

Helen and William have another brother, Marius Corbyn.
