Master Gruit is a wine merchant in Vanam, originally from the dukedom of Marlier in Lescar. One evening, at a feast, he rebukes the other Lescari for sending their families money that only ends up paying for the mercenaries that keep Lescar in a constant state of war. He later realizes the impracticality of simply cutting off the money, but his goading is the first step towards the rebellion against the dukes. He becomes the financier of the rebellion.
