Michael Dougherty, presumably a man of great charm, was a member of the Delaware Regiment fighting for independence in May, 1977. In June, he deserted, only to return in August. He was then captured by the British and agreed to join their army rather than be imprisoned. Recaptured by the Americans, he was bayoneted, but nursed back to health and rejoined the Delaware Regiment. Again captured by the British, he turned his coat again and enlisted in Tarleton's Legion. Recaptured by the Americans, his wounds were again treated and he was returned to the Delaware Regiment, their commander Robert Kirkwood remarking, "I love my comrades and they love Dougherty."
