Richard Pindell was a Maryland surgeon who joined the 1st Maryland Regiment January 1, 1777. He struggled to provide medical care to the sick and wounded in extremely difficult conditions. Sometimes he also served as a combat officer and rallied the men. He survived the war and settled in Kentucky where he became the personal physician for Speaker of the House Henry Clay. He received a pension for his service.
