Going fishing for the first time, starting in a new school, saving the farmhouse from a fire - these are the elements of young Rose Wilder's first year at Rocky Ridge Farm. She has moved there with her parents, Laura and Almanzo, to begin a new life in the Missouri Ozarks. Rose feels out of place as the new girl in her class but gradually gains confidence, and Rocky Ridge truly becomes her home.

The Rose books continue to be a pleasure to read. For Little House fans, this one has a couple of moments that give insight into Laura and Manly's ongoing story, including a touching discussion of why Rose was an only child. ( )

Nice follow-up to the first book in the series about Rose, the daughter of Laura from the Little House books. I'll be reading the next book, and possibly the others as well. ( )

This is the second volume of the Little House: The Rocky Ridge Years series, telling the tale of Rose Wilder, the daughter of Almanzo and Laura Ingalls Wilder. Essentially it's more of the same--a peek into the life of folks trying to eke out a living by farming in Missouri in the 1890's. It's enjoyable reading--excellent waiting room material--but there's nothing that compels one's readership.

Rose is settling in to life at Rocky Ridge and experiencing the ups and downs of farm life. Rocky Ridge is a busy place, and many things happen. She’s starting school and finding out that she’s the star student- not only that, but school is too easy for her. She adjusts to town school as a country girl. ( )
