Okay, so this book here? Continuously downward, counting from book 1.

I DO NOT CARE TO BE SPOON-FED!
Too much info-dumping.
Too many too convenient things.
I resent being cheated out of a good read.

Kudos for science triumphing when magic couldn't.
The glbtq thing thrown in at the end is baffling in the light of its absence until then - not a single allusion, as I recall.
Epilogue is a bit of a curve-ball, but I can see this happening.

CONVENIENCE DOES NOT A GOOD BOOK MAKE.

FINAL VERDICT: SO DISAPPOINTING. TRY AT YOUR OWN PERIL ( )

perfectly satisfying ending to a fun, romantic and often moving trilogy. 5 for the series overall, 4 for this installment. ( )

Да, есть пара неувязочек, и они меня раздражали.
Да, мои ожидания не оправдались - после накала второй книги я ждала чего-то более впечатляющего в самом конце.
И всё же, всё же это лучшее романтическое YA, прочитанное мной за последние три года.
А ещё я благодарна Томас, что она не ленится доводить до конца все линии, которые нужно закончить, разрешать все важные конфликты. Мне грустно расставаться с Титом и Иолантой (и я, несомненно, буду перечитывать), но нет ощущения того, что что-то недодали, как было после окончания "Earth Girl" Эдвардс. ( )

Oh man, how do I even describe this book? It's big. Or it felt big, because it dragged for the first half. It took me ages to read it because the mind kept snagging at something and I'd lose interest and put it down. It's like it's been crammed too much with everything. I was starting to feel disappointed.


Then the second half happened. And suddenly it felt epic. It felt profound, and my heart was racing.


"Titus did not scream. He did not smash the furniture. He did not crumple to the floor, sobbing.

He lay perfectly still, listened to the soft breaths of her peaceful slumber, and wept in complete silence.

I love you. I will love you until the end of the world."

These two! Fairfax and Titus has such an amazing couple dynamics. There is a perfect balance of power and yet, there are reversed gender roles. She is the prophesied girl and he is a supporting character, who supplies her with means and training, and yet both have equally huge roles to play.


The Immortal Heights picks up where The Perilous Sea ended. They are in the desert and have to get out under Bane's siege. Throughout the whole book Titus and Iolanthe are joined by Kashkari and Amara - both amazing characters in their own right.


While running for their lives and searching for ways to get into Atlantis, the team continues to reveal old secrets, extra prophecies and Bane's own terrible past. That villain, boys and girls! He is perfectly evil and horrifying. When he is vanquished and as this is the last part of the trilogy and we all believe in happily ever after I am not revealing any shocking truths *grinning*, he is vanquished in a truly spectacular fashion.


And the sacrifices! This book is riddled with them. They are majestic and meaningful, and bring tears to your eyes.


"For what is the Void but the beginning of Light?" said Titus, quoting from the Adamantine aria. "What is the Light but the end of Fear?"


Iolanthe heard her own voice joining him in the rest of the verse. "And what am I, but Light given form? What am I but the beginning of Eternity?"


You are the beginning of Eternity now, she said silently to [omitted as a spoiler]. You have arrived at the end of Fear. And I will love you always, for as long as the world endures."


The ending is gorgeous, and I felt really happy leaving our characters like this, saying goodbye. So, my dear readers, persevere through the first half of the book, the rest is totally worth it. The whole series is wonderful and hugely recommended. ( )

I absolutely loved the first book in this series and enjoyed the second book as well. This is the final book in this series and honestly my least favorite of the bunch. The beginning is a bit awkward and hard to engage with but the story improved as it continued.

The story starts with Titus and Iolanthe in the desert with the Rebel forces. The Bane is still hunting them and has issued an ultimatum; Titus must hand over Iolanthe or the Bane will destroy all of Titus’s realm. Titus and Iolanthe decide they must finally cut off the Bane at his source; they must find his original body and destroy it. However that is not an easy task. To get to the Bane’s body they will have to journey into the heart of Atlantis and deep into the dark depths of the Bane’s fortress.

This book starts right in the middle of a battle in the desert, pretty much where the last book left off. However, it was a bit jarring to be thrown right back into that battle while you were struggling to remember what happened in the last book (for some reason the 2nd book was a bit forgettable for me) and try to remember who was who. I really struggled with the first 20% or so of this book and almost stopped reading it.

However the story does pick up and gets better as Iolanthe and Titus get back on the road and come up with a plan to destroy the Bane. There are a lot of surprises and the 2nd half of the book is very good. I think the main problem with this book is pacing; the beginning and parts of the middle really drag while the end is absolutely crammed full of revelations and action scenes. It makes for an inconsistently paced story that’s a bit hard to read.

The other complaint I have is that despite Titus and Iolanthe’s declared love for each other they still don’t trust each other and work together. They don’t respect each other’s skills but are constantly trying to protect and exclude each other. I have a real problem with this. They do start working together a bit better toward the end of the book; but throughout most of the story they make a lot of the same relationship mistakes over and over again,

Towards the end of the book there are some awesome magical battles which were very fun to read about. Additionally I enjoyed some of the plot twists in the second half. I also enjoyed how everything wrapped up.

Overall this was a decent conclusion to the Elemental Trilogy. I think it could have been a much better book if it had been paced better. I did enjoy how the story was wrapped up so that was nice. I would recommend this whole series to fans of magic heavy fantasy. ( )
