This book is suitable for primary aged students. It encapsulates the different components and wonders of a seed. It describes seeds characters as being sleepy, adventurous, inventive, along with other qualities. This book is informative but also engaging, due to the beautiful illustrations, fonts, and colors. It is a wonderful book for curing young children's curiosity about growth within nature. I would love to use this book in my classroom as a part of a science lesson about nature. I find the book to be a great tool to use because of how informative and engaging it is. ( )

This book is in poetic form and follows the life of seeds. The reader is able to read about components of seeds and the differences between the seeds. Such as the differences between fruit & vegetable seeds and a redwood tree. The visuals in the book are eye catching and engaging. I would say that this book offers an introduction to the life cycle of plants - enough to spark interest and give students a jumping off point into further research. This is a book I would use as a read-aloud before sending the students to gather seeds. I would then have the students label the seeds they found to the best of their ability and document their findings in their science notebook. Overall, I would say this book is grade appropriate for kindergarten - first grade. ( )

The book A Seed is Sleepy is all about different types of seeds, the life cycle, germination, how seeds get moved, and so on. This book is full of beautiful illustrations and facts that keep the reader interested and engaged throughout the entire book. It is full of information and could be used easily by a teacher in an elementary school classroom. Teachers could use this book for a science unit on plants and their life cycle! After reading this book, students can create a graphic organizer of a plant life cycle or plant their own seeds and document the information. I like this book because it is beautifully illustrated and holds a lot of great information that can be used for multiple projects and assignments. ( )

A seed is sleepy, secretive, fruitful, naked, comes in many sizes, is adventurous, drifts, is inventive, generous, ancient, thirsty, hungry, clever, sleepy, and awake! Beautifully written and illustrated. This book captures the fascinating details of the tiny and not so tiny seeds that give us life. It is artistically done, informative, and great for nature lovers of all ages. Makes a wonderful coffee table book. ( )

An informative picture book about seeds and plant life is gorgeously captured through the illustrations and words throughout the book.
This book is great to use when having a lesson on germination and plant cycle. The book balances the information just right, making it suitable for children. ( )

Really beautiful illustrations accompanies with detailed descriptions of the functions of a seed and their growth. Because the illustrations are so vivid I think students could gain a lot just from looking at the pictures even if they don't have a strong capability to read the text. This would be a great book to include in a unit on plant growth! I think this book would be best for k-3. ( )

This book was beautiful in so many different ways! The illustrations and words flow seamlessly, and it has a poetic feel to it along with scientific touches. This book would be great to use in the study of a plants, trees, flowers and seeds. It describes and shows a variety of ways that a seed starts out and how it can turn into many different things from trees to flowers and plants. There are awesome little bits of info placed all over the pages and all the plants, flowers, seeds and trees are all labeled clearly. I think it would be fun to take this book and have the kids try to grow some of the seeds that they see in this book. There is one page that shows a timeline break down for certain seeds and I think kids would really enjoy growing their own plants and flowers from seeds and creating their own personal timeline. ( )

I have been very pleased with the illustrations provided in all of the science books I have added to my collection, this one in particular. I decided to check out a book on seeds hesitantly because I thought "how could a book about only seeds catch a child's attention?" But, the accuracy and artwork in "A Seed Is Sleepy" blew my hesitation away. All different types of seeds that there are in nature were presented in this book that I learned much new information. Great explanations of how these seeds travel, germinate, live, and do their jobs every day. ( )

This book has a different adjective on each page which describes a seed. Then, it talks about why a see can be described with that adjective and gives examples of different seeds. ( )

This book would be good to use for a unit regarding the plant cycle and how they grow. As well as understanding the variety of plants and the variety of conditions that are needed to grow. This book also gives good clear information. This would also be a good interactive look at the anatomy of a plant, and how they spread their seed and grow. This book would be good to help look at different processes that happen in nature like photosynthesis for example. ( )

this book has great illustrations of the different seeds and basic descriptions of how that seed is special and how it grows. I think it would be a good intro book, but would need more instruction to support the idea of plant cycles and how seeds work. Could be a good tool to have students begin wondering about seeds.

This is an awesome book to help kids learn more about seeds and how plants grow from them. The book is full of poetry and awesome illustrations. You can learn more and more about seeds. Often times, students focus on plants when it comes to science. However, this book gives you an inside look of how plants even come to be. I would highly recommend this book for a children's science class. It definitely kept my interest, and it was all so beautiful to look at. ( )

Description:
This book describes different characteristics of seeds from around the world with the use of watercolor illustrations and diagrams. The book describes how seeds from various plants vary in size, coating, method of dispersal, and more.

Personal reaction:
I like how this book gives life to a seed, describing it as sleepy, clever, adventurous, thirsty, and hungry. I think students would be more able to comprehend the information because they too have experienced these feelings. The illustrations and text in this book are very pleasing and inviting to the eye. I think this book is a great introduction to different seed-related topics, such as seed dispersal, germination, and growth and development.

Keywords/science topics:
Plants, seeds, fruits, naked seeds (gymnosperms), parts of a seed, germination, extinction

A couple of uses:
- After reading this book as a class, have your students spend the week collecting seeds from around their home (seeds from eaten fruit, from garden, etc). Have the students tape the seeds to a piece of paper and label them as best as they can. You can refer to the book to show how the illustrator labeled their images of seeds. To make this a more accesible activity for all, create the option of having students collect seeds from around the school grounds with the teacher's supervision. Have students bring their findings to school and then move forward with a discussion on how the seeds are similar and different. Talk about size, shape, texture, etc.
- Focus in on the page titled "A Seed is Inventive." Open a discussion on the ways a seed can travel to different spots in search of a place to grow. An example would be how certain seeds like the cocklebur have spikes that allow them to attach to clothing and fur.
- Focus in on the page titled "A Seed is Generous." This page contains a timeline of the life of a bean that can be used to introduce students to germinating their own bean. As students germinate their own bean, they can make their own timeline with diagrams to show the different stages the bean goes through as it grows. ( )

This book is very beautifully crafted both in storytelling as well as illustrations. The way that the "seed" of plants is brought to life and given human characteristics is wonderfully done so that a student can easily recognize and describe the function of a seed without all of the technical jargon.

This book is full of beautiful an detailed illustrations that really grabs the readers attention. The book talks about all different kinds of seeds and different seasons. Every seed that is drawn in this book as a caption by it saying what kind of seed it is which is very helpful for the reader. This is a very good informational book because it gives a lot of information and gives detailed illustrations which helps the students follow the information more. ( )

This book is all about seeds and how important they are for life on earth. The book starts by going over all the different things seeds are: sleepy, secretive, fruitful etc.. In doing this, it intices the reader because of course seeds don't really sleep, so it is intriguing to the reader to see what the seed actually does. It then goes over how a seed grows and all the things that it need, and then it's journey to becoming a plant.
