Overnight the world as Emilia, better known as Emmy, knows it changes. A virus that turns humans into mindless hungry zombie like creatures is threatening to wipe out humanity. Which is where the Silvers come in. The Silvers are a vampiric race that offers humans protection in return for blood and service. But Emmy is not one to give up her freedom without a fight. Emmy finds herself drawn to two of the most powerful Silvers. As her connection with these two increases Emmy finds herself drawn into a political battle that might just cost her life.

Overall I really enjoyed this book. It sucks the reader in right away. I did find it a little slow at times but that is because it need to take time to explain our character's world. Also found Emmy to be slightly annoying but towards the end I felt I began to understand her more. I cannot wait to read the next book in the series! ( )

LIKES
- This book is pretty much everything I like in my paranormals. Romance, vampires, creepy zombie-like things, cool world building, etc.
- We're set in London where all of sudden these zombie creatures (though they're call Weepers here because of their bloodshot eyes) come out of hiding and start attacking people. Naturally I'm so here for this apocalypse because this is exactly what I love reading. What throws me off is that the vampires actually want to help! They're still kind of the villains here but I was surprised they were actually taking over to prevent all the humans to be killed.
- I loved Emmy as a main character. She was sassy but not so sassy that she'd get herself killed like in so many books we see lately. She was a good point between not enough and too much and I liked that even as everyone tells her vampires as bad, she still wants to determine that for herself.
- There were a few of the typical tropes (mainly a love triangle) but I actually really loved it and was really rooting for one of the guys! Sadly, I don't think he's going to be the one picked but I'll keep dreaming. To be fair, both potential love interests (good news, there's no actual declarations of love in this book. It was actually realistic!) were really great and I love them both. I was just slightly rooting for one over the other.
- I also liked how there was no insta-love in this story. Insta-lust there was a lot of but I'm here for that and didn't mind a bit.
- I liked how this world was different but not complicated enough so that I got lost. It was easy to follow and I'm looking forward to where the next books will take us.

DISLIKES
- The beginning of the book was a little rushed but once I got everything in this world figured out I quickly forgot about it.
- Beside the beginning it was a little predictable at points but I just really enjoyed reading it all so it didn't bother me much like it normally does.

love vampire books! I started my reviewing activity with vampire books. I reconnected with my Passion for reading after devouring “Vampire Academy”. So when the author approached me to read and review “A Bargain in Silver”, I was so excited! My apologies to Josie Jaffrey because my review is long overdue!

I was expecting a lot because I was missing reading about strong vampires, with strong feelings, that love and protect their soul mates. However, the first book in the “Solis Invicti” series delivered only a part of those expectations.

The story opens with the world being taken over by vampires, good and bad ones. Our main character is saved by one of the good guys and introduced to the new protectors of human kind. Emmy has to find her lace surrounded by beings who want her blood, but also by people who envy her for closeness not only to the leader, but also to his second in command.

We have here a love triangle, although I am not sure if he is in love with any of these guys. Sol, the leader, has the allure of power and mystery. Under his protection she is untouchable. Drew, the Secundus (and leader of the Solis Invicti) is in over his head, crazy in love with a woman who may or may not be his. As for Emmy, I completely disliked her attitude. She is hot and then cold. She believes one then fears the other or vice versa. I did appreciate her will to survive and be independent at all cost, but she pushed a lot of limits and played with hearts a lot.

The writing was not bad at all. The world building is amazing and the idea of two type of vampires fighting for food (one in a practical way and the other in a chaotic manner) is interesting. There is a political intrigue that is not well developed in this book, but I hope to read more about it in the other ones. It felt a little weird how all characters were on short name basis so quickly, but I can get over it.

With all these items, I will give “A bargain in Silver” 3.5 stars (rounded to 4) with my hope that the next book will be even better. ( )

Emilia resists the change with her being. Somehow in her attempt to escape the rule of the Silvers, she finds herself more tangled in their world. Her resistance has drawn her closer to the most elite of the Silver. Now Emmy has to decide where to take her chances: the Weepers who she knows will kill her or the Silver who include a few who have _targeted her for reasons she can’t explain.

Bargain in Silver, Solis Invicti Book 1 by Josie Jaffrey is a spell bounding young adult fiction with a cliffhanger that will have you thirsty for Book 2.

What Did Work: Bargain in Silver does not let down in the use of the old in a new way. Jaffrey takes vampires and uses them to construct a new world for the characters. To begin the word vampire is rarely used in the story though Emmy does so in an almost further means to rebel. They are Silver in respects to their most identifying feature, their eyes. Silvers are strong, fast, beautiful creatures with unlimited resources and some with an entitled mentality. None of these characteristics are new, but Jaffrey uses these old favorites to create a world out of London in a setting that transpires into something new and interesting. Speed that can kill? How about speed that can build a city out of decimation in a day?
Love triangles are the bread and butter of young adult novels and Jaffrey does not let down. Can a love triangle develop when blood, murder, and curiosity is hanging in the face of a person who refuses to accept the new status quo? Emmy will infuriate you with her decision making and Jaffrey teases the reader relentlessly only showing two sides of the triangle. But I will not spoil!

Get this book, some wine, and a few friends and you have a steamy book club talking about eyes, touching, and space in ways I never thought to imagine for vampires.

What Didn’t Work: Though the story is moderately paced and not of exhausting length, the tale seems longer as we continue to listen to Emmy mentally pine over the death of her friends and question everything around her. Resistance is her main attribute, but so much time is spent going over “the betrayal” she feels from Drew that it makes you want to scream “get over it and look at what is going on in front of you” into the pages of the book. And while Emmy’s train of thought seems to be stagnant sometimes, other characters emotions move at whiplash speed or in circumstances that made me wonder how a race of people who can see and do so much also miss so much. So no one thought to warn Emmy about that person only pretending to like humans? How was that missed? The humans are not much better than the Silver. From friends who get angry at nothing to strangers who harbor resentment, some of the characters seem bipolar and cause a stark contrast to the main character.

Still, this book was a great read and enjoyed it. Rec this book to paranormal romance type fans. ( )
