Lots of 5 star reviews for this one & thats for a good reason. This is a superb middle grade adventure. Gus finds himself being bulled by town rough neck Bo once again, but this time his friend Rossi comes to his aid but it costs her her dirtbike. Gus is determined to "pay back" Rossi & get her bike back but he's going to have to bring some gold out of the old (& collapsing) gold mine. The book had me on the edge of my seat not sure how the protaganists were going to get out of scrape after scrape. ( )

Representation: Latino/a and Native American characters
Trigger warnings: Near-death experience, physical injury, bullying, death of people in the past, sexism
Score: Seven out of ten.

24 Hours in Nowhere by Dusti Bowling was enjoyable but flawed and could have been better.

It starts with Gus, who must buy back a dirt bike from another character, Rossi.

The pacing is swift at less than 280 pages. Few scenes are slow, but when they are, they focus on dialogue between the characters such as Gus and Rossi. Additionally, 24 Hours in Nowhere is a contemporary thriller because of the pacing and action scenes.

The writing style is accessible for a younger audience because it avoids purple prose but lacks detailed descriptions. Thus, the unique settings were not fully immersive but could have been more descriptive.

While most characters are likable, except the antagonist, all lack relatability, depth or development when more could have helped. The exception is Gus, who has simplistic character dynamics with other characters, but that is not enough.

The plot flows along because it is linear. There are no flashbacks, but characters discuss past events through dialogue, making 24 Hours in Nowhere more focused and less distracted.

The conclusion is satisfying.

Yeah, no, not for me. Opening with the extreme bully, and the extreme grandma, it's just too much for this jaded adult. January 2022.
