I got the book for free in exchange for a honest review(Lovers of Paranormal). The following review may contain spoilers.

Rating 8 of 10

Very interesting read. I loved the story. And I think the idea of the names is really sweet and funny.

The main heroine, Caledonia, is a shy teenage girl. But she knows how to take care of herself, or others, if needed. I liked her very much, mostly because she really seems to be a smart girl. I had a great time reading how she dealt with her aunt's pity excuse of a boyfriend or how she played Dr. Teddy and the escape with the sheets was just fabulous.
The second Cal in the book, Calvin, is a jerk at first but showed his good side pretty fast, so I didn't really had much time to detest him. He then turns into the perfect boyfriend. I liked the fact that we actually saw the relationship between Cal&Cal grow and it wasn't an instant love. The biker boy had to win the trust of the girl. I just didn't understand how he did the stupid thing do bring Calli to his grandparents' house when they were running. It was only logical that this is gonna be the first place for Dr. Teddy's team to check.
I sort of also liked Layla. She might grow to become a favorite of mine in the next books. For her brother thought I still don't have an opinion but he sure acted like an idiot.
Now enters the villain - Dr. Teddy. He is the typical mad scientist - he doesn't care who he hurts or even kills as long as he gets what he wants. Oh, I loved how he got played in the end.
I am curious what Max's plans are from now on. And what he wants from the twins? Is it just money or it's something else?
Altogether the book is a great read. Some things reminded me a little about [b:Firestarter|233667|Firestarter|Stephen King|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1378038479s/233667.jpg|1803] (a girl who's parents have been part of some sort of an experiment is wanted by these who'd done it for her special powers) but not too much. I would love to read the next book. ( )

This is a book I would want to read over an over. It caught my interest from the beginning, and when I say it kept my interest, I mean it kept me up all night long I think I went to sleep at 7:30 this morning, with 91% read by the time I couldn't keep my eyes open any longer. Then of course I finished it up this afternoon. This is a cross I feel between Young Adults, and Urban Fantasy. It's a book that older teens and Adults of all ages could enjoy.

This is about a girl name Cal (Caledonia)who lives with her parents in the middle of no where in Eureka. She was happy in ignorant of the world outside. But then her parents die in a tragic accident and she is sent to live with her aunt she never even knew about. She's overwhelmed by everything, cause not only is the world new to here, but she can see people's emotions. So she tries get through her day with her head low, disappearing into the world. Until she catches the eye of one seemingly bad boy named Cal (Calvin). Quinky dink on the names right, I think it's cute. But one night she rescues Calvin from getting beat up by some "ruffians". And from there, he was drawn to her, falling more and more in love with her each day. She made him feel alive, and made him look towards the future, and he showed her things of the world, loving the way she would light up with everything. They fell in love, and it was a great kind of love. Soul mate kind of love.

However, every story needs it's conflict, something that throws a wrench into things. Well of course this one isn't any exception. Come to find out the reason to why Caledonia is the way she is with her being able to see emotions. Her parents were part of an experiment that was supposed to messed with their genes, instead it messed with their heirs genes. So Caledonia, and this other girl Lyla both have two different color eyes and both can see and through emotions. Professor Teddy the one who has orchestrated the Athena project. He finds out about Caledonia and wants her so he kidnaps her. he's pretty weird making the children live in rooms made up like dollhouses and dressed them in like 50's styled clothing very odd. But Cali wasn't buying any of it. She wanted out, she wanted to get back to Calvin, and Calvin is trying to get Cali back. Well Calvin does find her, Caledonia climbs down a bedsheet to get to her love.

Well Max, The head of Professor Teddys guards, he had something up his sleeve, and after Cali escaped, he revealed to Professor Teddy that he wiped him out financially and has is taking the twins with him, and that he has his own plans for them. Which makes you think UH OH & YAY another book.

I cannot wait until then next book is out, this is a series I could really sink my teeth into. ( )

I had heard such good things about this author maybe I was expecting to much. I will say that the author had had a really good imagination. I personally just found this to dark for me and really did not like the ending. ( )

I won a copy through a BookLIkes.com giveaway. Even wheni lost my copy after the kindle app on my iPhone crashed and I lost the document I contact ed the author and she provided me with another copy, so thank you for that :)

This turned out to be quite different from what I expected, and I'm please to say I thoroughly enjoyed it. I did get a bit confused when starting the book, with the hero and heroine having the name nickname of Cal. Her name Caledonia and his name Calvin. But the flow of the story made it easy to get around that. It wasn't something that cropped up all the time.

The story was quite original, which I liked to see. Caledonia has an unusual ability and her parents keep her away from the public and raise her out of the way in the woods. Tragedy strikes and she has to go live with an aunt she's never met and deal with high school for the first time. Very difficult with her ability. Caledonia was a wonderful character. She was quite naive about the way the world worked having not grown up in it, but she learned to cope quite well and turned out to be amazingly strong willed.

The bad boy love invest Calvin was a typical biker partying hooking up with random girls type. I didn't like him much when the book started, he notices Caleodonia right away but she quickly picks up on the bad boy biker partied thing and doesn't want anything to do with him. No insta love, it takes time for the to grow comfortable with each other. Calvin's biker brother and the girls who hang around turn out to be not so bad and actually pretty decent people when Caledonia does come into the picture.

And when the romance finally gets there...the feels in this book are so wonderful, it packs quite an emotional punch throughout. Both characters grow tremendously as people. Cali's abilities come into play an important part of the story and there are bad guys who come into play. Left open need for the next book, I would definitely be interested in where to see the story goes next.

This was a really solid young adult book. To me it seemed to cross a couple genres but mainly it was paranormal and romance. I really loved Caledonia and Calvin and didn't find myself confused at all when they both were being called Cal. I am really excited to read more of this series. ( )

Though I received this book for free, in no way did that influence this review.

I was pleasantly surprised with this book. The story has excellent pacing, starting out a bit slow as Ms. Anderson builds her world and introduces us to the people that populate it. From the very beginning it is different than most stories, but in a very intriguing way. We meet Caledonia's parents when they are very young and looking lost in the middle of a rain storm. Their luck turns when a kindly trucker picks them up and gives them a ride north.

Fast forward seventeen years to Caledonia wandering through the forest, completely at home and in tune with everything around her. She and her parents have lived off the grid for her entire life, her only connection to the world outside the forest being the education her parents give her and the books that her father brings back from his rare trips into town. Those and books the sheriff drops off every so often when he swings by to check on them. Caledonia reads everything she can get her hands on, including every single volume of the Encyclopedia she was given.

Not everything in Caledonia's world is idyllic, as her parents struggle with horrible flashbacks and hallucinations, though Cali has no idea what causes them. However they always help each other through the bad times, until the fateful day when their motorcycle is hit head on by a trucker as they were returning home from a trip into town. They were killed instantly.

With her parents gone Caledonia, still a minor, is sent to live with her only living relative, Aunt Angie. Angie is not too hot about suddenly having a kid, and her boyfriend Phil is far from pleased. As time progresses Phil starts looking at Cali the wrong way, going so far as to make passes at her. She takes to sleeping in graveyards and parks at night to avoid his advances. When Caledonia tells Angie, she refuses to believe Cali & chooses to champion Phil instead, so the situation continues to spiral out of control.

The only good thing in Cali's world is Calvin a.k.a. Cal. At first Cali wants nothing to do with him, but time and her growing abilities change all that. Just knowing Caledonia changes Cal from a misogynistic jerk to being a sweet and considerate young man.

But there doesn't appear to be a rosy future on the horizon for the young lovers, as Caledonia is being pursued by an incredibly evil man. By now the pacing of the story has you stuck to the book, unable to put it down. Watching the two main characters change is sweet, and the action is pretty much non-stop, with one obstacle after another thrown at the determined pair.

I must say that this story had me firmly in its clutches, enough so that I bought the second book before I even had a chance to complete this one. I'd say that is pretty much a ringing endorsement! Easily a great summer read, but also works for curling up in front of the fire on a cold day. I can't wait to get stared on book two! ( )

I received this book for free from the author in exchange for a honest review.

At the beginning, it was very interesting. I loved how Cali saw auras, but didn't complain a lot. She was very interesting to read, since she was an outsider. Add the fact that she liked to read, and I was hooked.

Cal, the love interest seemed a bit uninteresting at first. He wasn't focused on what to do after graduation. However, when Cali came into his life, he pretty became perfect.

There was some insta-love, which was annoying.

Some parts in the book dragged at times.

The writing was overall well done, but seemed forced at times.

When I first read the synopsis for The Athena Effect I was very intrigued and thought it sounded like an interesting YA novel. I was right and this is an easy book to get lost in.

The plot is different from what I have read lately and I really liked it! We start with a prologue about a young couple who are running away together. From the little bit you read about them they are scared and the girl is pregnant.

When the story starts we meet Cali who is a bit of a wild child. She is homeschooled and is kept away from the world. Her parents have taught her survival skills, how to hunt and to take care of herself. They live totally off the grid. Which is a good thing since Cali is special, she can see and taste the emotions of animals and people around her and she can control them…

Then Cali’s parents are killed in an accident and she has to go live with an aunt she never met and her creepy boyfriend. While Cali doesn’t fit in with the people at school she does eventually make friends with a neighbor boy named Cal. He looks her parents up on the internet which sends an alarm to someone who has been looking for her parents for quite a while…

I enjoyed The Athena Effect so much I finished it in one day! Needless to say I am looking forward to the next installment to this series! ( )

The Athena Effect
The Athena Effect Book One
By Derrolyn Anderson

Cali was born and raised without any modern conveniences having been secreted away by her parents. Completely off the grid until one day when both her parents are in a motorcycle accident that leaves Cali orphaned. She soon moves in with her aunt and her sleazy boyfriend biding her time until she can return to the countryside that she loves so much. That is until she meet Cal and he shows her there is more than just amenities she will be missing.

First you have a great storyline of a girl who knows nothing of modern day society except what she has read in books, which the author did an amazing job in bringing to life, then you have the reason she has been kept hidden adding a whole new dimension to the novel. I am fast becoming a fan of Derrolyn Anderson as her writing is fantastic and her stories are truly unique and captivating. This is no exception The Athena Effect has aspects of fantasy and science fiction rounded out by the young adult genre turning this into one fascinating novel. I cannot wait to see where the rest of this series will take us as Cali and Cal are two of the most interesting characters I have come across and when you add in the characters that appear towards the end there is no doubt you will want more.

The Athena Effect by Derrolyn Anderson
5 STARS

I decided on giving 5 STARS because I wanted more. I was not ready for it to end at all. I like Cal she is strong, independant, loves to read, smart and really doesn't understand what modern life is about.
Cal lives with her parents in the wilderness in a cabin. She met her first new person the Sheriff when she was 10. She hunted for meet and provided it for her family.
Her parents always told Cal not to trust people and don't tell anyone what she can do.
One day her parents were killed on thier bike and Cal was sent to live with her aunt and her boyfriend.
Cal really liked hot water. wearing clothes her mom made or some from thrift store she went to school for the first time at 16. Cal was smart. She has read most of the encylopedia and tons of books. She was teased at school a lot.
Her's Aunts boyfriend started to get ideas about her. Especially while drinking so Cal stayed away as much as possible.
One night she was in the cematary and saw a bunch of people holding a boy from school who lives close to her being beat up as a message for his brother. She told them to stop and they came after her. she hurt one and was able to reach her knife and threaten them away. The boy's name was Cal too. He saw her scars before she ranoff.
A few days later he saw her scars and realized that she was the one to help him.
Cal started calling her Calie and trying to learn more about her. Cal was living with his brother. They were bikers and had a lot of parties. Cal was popular with the girls and slept around without making any promises.
Calie was trying to stay away from him the exact oppisite he was used too. Calie helped Cal rescue his brothers pit bull from being killed by calming all the dogs in the shelter so they could rescue him. Calie loved animals and good change thier moods easliy.
Their is lots of drama in Calie's life trying to fit in a modern school, living with her Aunt and her boyfriend. Her powers start to change.
Cal and Calie are getting really close. Cal feels different about Calie than he has anyone else. Then Cal finds out about a group that Calies parents belonged too.
Someone else found out that Calie existed and wants her for his sceince experiments.
More drama of a different kind then happens in the story.
I really enjoyed it thier was a short love scene that did not get graphic but I don't like it when everyone takes it for granted.
At first glance you don't think Cal and his brother are the good guys. But the more you know you see how much they care about each other and thier good side.
This I believe the second book I have read from Derrolyn Anderson and it won't be the last one.
I was contacted by the author and given this ebook with a request to give it honest reviews when I finshed. ( )
