Beneath This Mask: The Beneath Series, Book 1 (edition 2015)by Meghan March (Author), Andi Arndt (Narrator), Holter Graham (Narrator), Meghan March (Publisher)“I might not have any right to your love, and it might be stolen, but it’s mine and it’s precious and you can’t have it back.” ― Meghan March, Beneath This Mask I try to express only my most honest opinion in a spoiler free way. If you feel anything in my review is a spoiler and is not already hidden in spoiler brackets please let me know. Thank you. After Charolettes father is convicted for scamming people out of a HUGE amount of money. She becomes Charlie and starts life over in New Orleans. There she has friends a bed buddy and her baby, a dog. She has two jobs, one being at a tatoo parlor, and thats were she meets Simon. The attraction between them is instant. What's worse is that he turns out to be a great guy that Charlie could truely fall for, but there is more than just the lies between them. Simon is in politics and tends to draw media attention, and she can't risk being recognized. I listened this on audio. I couldn't stop. It was a really great story. I didn't really like the narrator who did Simon's part but other than that there is no complaints with the audio. As for the book itself, its a romance, and it has got some very steamy scenes. Which I love, but not everyone does. Definitely an adult only book. There was some great nail biting scenes too. And there are definitely feeling to be felt here. How I choose my rating: 1* Did not finish, or hated it but forced myself to finish. 2** Didn't really like it. Didn't hate it but not sure why I finished it other then for some closure. 3*** I liked it. I had some issues with it, but as a whole it was good. I probably won't reread again ever, but there is a chance I might finish the series. (If part of one) But if not it's not a huge loss. 4**** I really liked this book. Maybe not a work of genius, but highly entertaining. I might reread this again, and I will finish the series. (If part of one) I would recommend to those I know hold interest in this books content. 5***** I loved this book. I found little to no issues with it at all. I will definitely be rereading this and probably more than once. I will finish the series and reread it multiple times. (If part of one) I will recommend this book to EVERYONE!!!! A Rollercoaster romance with and unconventional heroine The characters were easy to get along with and the story was a little thrilling in its own way. There were a few moments where they made choices that made you roll your eyes, but for the most part well written and well thought out. I loved everything about Charlie, and Simon was pretty dreamy. Former blue blood and wealthy as sin, Charlotte stepped off the witness stand after she testified against her father who had scammed a lot of people and stolen their money! One thing she knew was she'd left the designer life in favor of making her own way without people hounded her about what was her dad's problem. I loved that Simon Duchesne knew what he wanted when he looked at a hot looking woman who worked at a tatoo parlor even with her keeping her distance. A contemporary romance novel set in New Orleans, the set up is a "Good Boy + Bad Girl" (though what seems to make this girl "bad" is the amount of ink, piercings and hair dye color she has!) Great story, graphic sex scenes (but nothing kinky)... Solid writing; but it lacked the kind of energy that maybe a little bit more humor would have lent it. He loves me, and he doesn’t even know my real name. I have seen several of these Maddoff-themed stories since the discovery of numerous large-scale Ponzi schemes over the last few years. I have read a couple of them, all involving a lead character who was the child of the main schemer. (Professional interest - I assisted with securities litigation when I was in private practice.) I decided to read this one because its set in New Orleans, and well, I live here. Unfortunately, while I do like to read legal-themed books... I find myself picking them apart and ranting at all of the idiosyncrasies. For instance, at the beginning of the book, we see Charlotte coming off the witness stand with the AUSA's question ringing in her ears: How does it feel to know your privileged life has been paid for with other people's dreams? An AUSA would never ask that. And if for some crazy reason they did, defense counsel would be jumping up to object and move for a mistrial before the question was even finished. But this is the day of Law & Order and CSI, and so I know this goes to the entertainment value. I try to ignore it, I really do. The story jumps forward to Charlotte in hiding, transformed into a tattooed "bad girl" chick, living under the name Charlie. Alas, she just wasn't believable as a true bad girl. It just screamed poser to me. Our male lead, Simon, was a clean-cut southern boy, son of a congressman and former Navy pilot. I liked Simon... but I didn't like them paired as a couple. As you can imagine, there was a lot of drama back and forth. And in the end, All-in-all, this story was okay for me. I didn't love it and I didn't hate it. I may have liked it more but I started reading it in the midst of a book hangover from my last read (Bright Side by Kim Holden). My favorite part of the whole book was Huck! |
