Absolutely loved everything about this book. Honestly, it was a nice refreshing story and I am happy to have read it. Maddie is a fantastic character and I love seeing her and Will grow. Of course, there is something I wish to curse about in this book, but that is too much of a spoiler as is. Trust me, if you've read the rest of the series you know what I'm talking about. I am excited to pick up the second book in this series! ( )

Another great installment in the Royal Ranger series. Maddie's growth throughout the series reminds me of Will as he went through his training with Halt.

I am looking forward to reading Ambush at Sorato next. ( )

The beginning of this book is so sad, my heart broke for Will and all of his friends on their loss. I am hopeful that this isn't the end of that story and that future books will bring a surprise somehow but I will not hold my breath. I loved Maddy's story arc in this novel and the addition of female Rangers to the core.

Looking forward to the rest of the books in this series. ( )

The Ranger's Apprentice series has been around a long time, and I highly recommend it to fans of adventure and action stories. The books are set in a sprawling world of kingdoms and forests and full of interesting characters, mystery, and adventure. The Royal Ranger is a spin-off series that caught my eye because it is about the first teenage girl to apprentice as a Ranger. It did not disappoint. It was fun, action-packed, and full of serious drama as well as humor. ( )

Everyone is worried about Will Treaty, who is depressed and hell bent of wreaking vengeance on Jury, whose act of setting an inn on fire killed Will's wife, Alyss. Meanwhile, Horace and Cassandra (Evanlyn) are dealing with their teenage daughter, Maddie. Halt and Gilan decide make Maddie into the first girl apprentice. Will and Maddie are then sent off the investigate the sudden death of a Ranger, and discover a series of child kidnappings behind the death. Together, they take on the entire gang. ( )

A transitional story from the original apprentice series to the next generation (and series) of rangers. Halt has retired; Will has matured. He’s also taken on an apprentice. She is not just the first female trainee, she’s also his goddaughter and the only child of his two best childhood friends Queen Cassandra and The Oak Leaf Knight Horace.

I like that the story acknowledges physical differences in strength and finds ways for Maddie to still be a ranger without making her into Wonder Woman or some kind of super freak. This makes me look forward to this new series as the author tackles a heroine as the central character. ( )

I never would have thought the Flanagan would bring this series to an end, choosing to instead let it just sort of hang out there. This book wraps up the series, in my opinion as it has been quite a few years since the previous book. It is great to see Will back in action, even as an adult.

Basic Storyline: Will is torn up by the unfortunate death of his wife, and is on a spree to kill the man./men responsible. To bring him out of this dark side, Halt and Galin propose to give him an apprentice to train. Turns out that Horace and Cassandra's daughter is of an age, and they are currently exasperated with her teenage rebelliousness. Long story short, she is assigned as an apprentice to Will, bringing about the acceptance of females into the Ranger's, as well as a new weapon they can use.

Though much of the story was somewhat predictable, and the writing set obviously for a more YA crowd, I thoroughly enjoyed returning to the tale of the Rangers again. ( )

It is not easy to write a 12 book series and not drop the quality. Well done, well done. ( )

As wonderfully enjoyable as the rest of the series. I liked getting back to the smaller tasks of a Ranger's life instead of the epic international missions. However, I think the story is over now. If I want more of this world, I'll start rereading.

I was never bothered by the relative lack of female characters in these stories. In fact, one thing that I love about them is the complex male characters and the relationships between the men and boys. I found myself missing that a bit. I loved the attention to weapons and technique and that Flanagan corrected some of the shoddy techniques of earlier characters. ( )

So I might have stayed up really late last night finishing this book. Devouring it whole is probably a fairly apt descriptor. And now I want to read it again. Reread the whole series, really.

The marketing of this series fascinates me. I know I need to check the children's section of my local bookshops if I want to find them. They are classified as juvenile fiction, or maybe sometimes as YA (I can't say as I have ever found them shelved in the YA/teen section, however). When the series starts, Will and his friends are fifteen years old, but by this last book they are, at an absolute minimum, in their mid-30s. That's a huge range of ages for a series of books aimed at children, but somehow it works. ( )

[review written 2013]

i was really bloody excited for this book bc i loved the previous ones so much and i had really high expectations but i was kinda disappointed????

because i feel like the book focused on maddie more than it did the other rangers i would really have loved a closing adventure with the other rangers more than i would have loved maddie growing up honestly like and al SO WHO GAVE YOU THE RIGHT TO KILL ALYSS huh huh especially offscreen

maddie’s drinking scene that was hilarious oh my god though it’s unreasonable and a Do Not Drink Alcohol aesop (seriously in the middle ages alcohol was drunk by a lot of people) but hey it was funny uh let’s see

there needed to be more halt wow there needed to be more halt and horace needed to be there being horace and it just seemed a lil off and i did enjoy it

but there wasnt enough halt and too much maddie sorry ( )

Although our family has followed this series from book #1, we were disappointed at the emphasis that it has started to take to give girls the same desire to protect and to defend the "kingdom" as the boys who apprenticed. The author did not over-extend here abilities to make her super-woman, as some fiction writers are want to do. He did allow for her strength being less than a man's and therefore she had to compensate in other ways, but the role was still protect and defend. It lessened the "realness" of the book.

My family still enjoyed it. ( )

Crossposted at Bookstooge.booklikes.blogspot.wordpress.com by express permission of this reviewer   Synopsis 15 to 20 years after The Lost Stories, Will is dealing with one of life's most grievous blows. At the same time Horace and Evanlyn are dealing with their rebellious daughter.   My Thoughts First off, Will's wife is dead (hide spoiler) . Once you get past that, then the story moves on.     Will is turning into a shell and Maddy is running so wild that she is in danger of becoming a danger to the Royal Family.   Everybody else gets together and comes up with a plan to force them together. It works. Will gets happy, Maddy grows up and they rescue a bunch of stolen children and give justice to the killer of Will's wife.   I found this slightly disgusting to be honest. I thought that Will's story should have ended back in The Lost Stories and this just smacked of something slightly off. I don't have a problem with more stories about the Rangers or this land, but either go with a different ranger, or skip a generation and start a new sub-series.   Also, this smacked of trying to get the girl "vote". Keep your "girl power" story in another time line. Don't force into characters that I've already spent 11 books worth of time with. Like I wrote before, write this story. Tell this "girl growing up" story. It is a good story. But it isn't a Will Treaty story.   I guess it came down to that I didn't want to read a new Will Treaty story, but was willing to read a Will Treaty story and this was NOT about him. He was ancillary.   Rating: 3 of 5 Stars   Author: John Flanagan " ( )

The Royal Ranger is the final installment of Will's story. However it feels more as though its the start of something new. This book creates more questions than it answers which is not how I believe this series should be ended. Although these bad remarks I still enjoyed reading this book as much as the previous ones. It was full of action and adventure, moving at a fast pace making it easy to enjoy and read. I would like to find out if Maddie completes her training and succeeds at becoming a Ranger as this is unanswered in the book. ( )

I presume this is the end of the Rangers Apprentice series ( even though I wish it wasn't). A fitting end to such a great series, handing off the reins to the next generation. ( )

The Royal Ranger is the finale to the Ranger's Apprentice series by John Flanagan. We have all waited for years for will to train an apprentice of his own. Finally, that time has come. When Will's wife is killed in a fire, Will seeks revenge on the arsonists, resorting to questionable actions to exact his revenge. As his actions become darker and darker, his teacher, Halt, as well as his other friends, decide that it is time for Will to take on an apprentice of his own. Luckily for Halt and the others, it just so happens that princess Maddie is a prime candidate for the job of being the next Ranger's Apprentice. Stubborn and selfish, her parents decide to send her to her uncle Will to learn a lesson or two about being kind to others and listening to rules. The two of them help each other to reach a better place. Maddie becomes less hostile and kinder, and Will learns t be happy once again. This tale returns us back to the beginning, with a master and an apprentice. Will has finally come around full circle from where he started. The journey for both of them is funny and engaging, showing the struggles of a master (as well as one in depression), and an apprentice. ( )

If you enjoyed the rest of this series, you will enjoy this book. It was a fitting end. Although, I do have to say I missed some of the regular characters, the only one to play a big role in this book is Will. I started reading this series because my (then) 9 year old wanted to read them. But, I have enjoyed it and highly recommend it if you enjoy YA books and good, clean adventure stories. ( )

A few years ago, with the publication of The Emperor of Nihon-ja, it seemed like the Ranger's Apprentice series was over. Well, he's baaack and the books are just as good as before. This is a young adult series, but it can easily be enjoyed by adults also. Flanagan has created an vibrant world and a believable cast of characters. Great series! ( )

Great Series! Many reluctant readers will read the entire series and ask for other books that are similar. I have yet to find any that matches the Ranger's Apprentice.
Thank goodness this book seems to be more of a beginning then an end. ( )

The twelfth book in the Ranger's Apprentice series. Will takes on an apprentice - the first girl in the ranger corps, and together they go on a mission that could kill both of them. ( )

With this book being the last one in the "Ranger's Apprentice" series, I had high expectations, and I definitely wasn't disappointed. Flanagan brings the series full circle with Will, probably in his forties at this point, taking on his own apprentice to train. This book has all the characteristics that I've come to expect from Flanagan: nail-biting suspense, lovable characters, quirky humor, page-turning action, nasty bad guys, and a few surprising twists. However, I was a bit nostalgic for the feel that came from Will being an apprentice with Halt as his mentor that came from the earlier books; but overall, I thoroughly enjoyed "The Royal Ranger." It's been a long time since I've been so sad to finish a book series. I'll definitely be looking for more books by John Flanagan! ( )

This book is amazing. The plot is about a rebellious young princess to the kingdom of Alorian who sneaks out in the night to hunt in the rolling forest outside of castle Alorian has gone one too many times. Her parents on their wits end final give in to an ex ranger who had suggested she become part of the Ranger Corps an elite group of independent soldiers who specialize in certain forest, horsemanship, and weapon skills. She proves to be the perfect candidate with one drawback., her time in the castle has left her with an attitude that will take time for the Ranger who she will be apprenticing with to fix. That ranger is Will Treaty. Now Will was having some problems of his own. He had just recently lost his wife to a gang of kidnappers who to escape had set an inn on fire. There was a girl trapped inside so Alyss(for that was her name)rushed in to save her. She died in doing so. So Will had his own vendetta that the rebellious princess had practically threw from his mind until their first mission. In that mission he came face to face with his wife's killer and in the end successfully killed him. In the end the princess is offered to go back home, but takes the option to stay on and finish her training.
This is book twelve of the series. It is also going to be the last. The most recent one of these books other than this one I read two years ago. The last one of John Flanagan's books I read one year ago and that was the brother band series which took up the time between the old Ranger's Apprentice and this new one. So this turned out to be a pleasant surprise. It made you wonder what Halt Will's mentor was thinking when Will was in training all of those books ago. The introducing of the characters as having aged between books 11 and 12 more than any other because of the actual two year gap between the books made it interesting. ( )

This book picks up on were Alys ( probably spelled that wrong) dies in a fire saving a young girl. Will then goes on a murderous rampage to catch the bandates who started the fire. In castle Aruleun Cassandras duaghter is driving her craxy with her adventures in the forest. Halt then decindes it would be a googd idea for Will to take on a apprentice and who better than Maddie ( the Daughter). They then wind up fighting a band of slave traders.
This book was awesome. It left at a cliff hanger a little so im hoping for a next book. I could read this book again and again. Also it follows the plot triangle very well. I would say it was a very googd ending to Wills story and had a lot of real life problems in this book. ( )
