We let Among the Enemy and Among the Betrayed go because they just weren't as good as Among The Hidden.

FROM AMAZON: What does it mean to save yourself?

Nina Idi - a third child in a society where families are allowed only two children - has been betrayed by the boy she loved and arrested by the Population Police for exposing other alleged third children. Angry and confused, Nina knows only one thing for sure: She is innocent of the charges. But now she is faced with the most difficult choice of her life: Get three other prisoners to admit they are shadow children and be spared herself, or refuse to cooperate and be killed. The options are clear. The choice, Nina discovers, is not....

"Everything that had happened to Nina was real. She had real handcuffs on her wrists, real scars on her back, real fear flooding her mind.
"'They're going to kill me,' Nina whispered, and it was almost a relief to finally, finally give up hope."
In a society that allows no more than two children per family under penalty of death, third children are forced into hiding, or to live with false identity papers. In Among the Impostors, Nina Idi was arrested for treason for supposedly trying to trick the Population Police into arresting other students she said were illegal third children. Now she faces torture or death -- unless she agrees to betray three other imprisoned third children. Her dilemma intensifies when she meets the prisoners -- who are only ten, nine, and six.
As she did so brilliantly in the Publishers Weekly best-selling Among the Hidden and in Among the Impostors, Margaret Peterson Haddix once again brings readers to a world in which nothing is as it seems -- a world in which an imprisonment leads to an adventure of mind, body, and spirit. ( )

My memory tells me this was my favorite book from the entire Shadow Children series when I read it years ago, but that's pretty much everything I can still remember about it. I definitely have to reread the books in order to refresh my memories. ( )

I try to express only my most honest opinion in a spoiler-free way. Unfortunately, there is still always a risk of slight spoilers despite my best efforts. If you feel something in my review is a spoiler please let me know. Thank you.

This book told the story from a different person's point of view, but still a shadow child. I liked the switch up, and the ending was amazing. These are short and easy to read books with a scary kind of plot. I'm excited to see how it progresses. ( )

Nina, a minor character from Book #2, is falsely accused of treason and imprisoned by the Population Police where she is forced to spy on other child prisoners, illegal third-born children like her or be killed herself. Nina then capitalizes on events, escapes the prison with the other children, and flees to the woods where she hopes to be safe, but is eventually caught for stealing food. But the consequences are not what the reader expects. ( )

These books are quite enjoyable. They're middle grade, and very short, and I think I would have loved them when I was younger. They just seem way too young now.

However I do think this was my favourite in the series so far. I liked Nina a lot more than I liked Luke. She seemed a little bit more mature, and was just in general a little more likeable.

I liked the other kids. The plot was sorta interesting.

Nothing special though. ( )

Among the Betrayed is the best book in this series so far. I loved the different perspective, but I really didn't like the main character. I thought Nina was a bit too whiny and spoiled. I'm sure she was created that way to show how much all the situations in this book changed her for the better, but it got a little overbearing sometimes. She herself was a third child, and she was having a tough time choosing whether or not to help the other third-children in the jail. I just thought it'd be like second nature for her to help children in the same situation as her.

I also believed the whole "trial" thing Jen's dad did to Nina was a bit much. He made a twelve-year old girl do things no child should ever have to experience, so when the end of the book came around and we had a big ball dropped on us I was glad to be done with the book.

Besides those two things though, I did enjoy it. I enjoyed the way Nina changed, and I'm really happy she came to her senses and realized these were people she wanted to help. I'm super excited to see where this series ends up! :) ( )

(see Book 1) Nina as protagonist, who has to decide if saving herself is more important than saving Matthias and his 2 younger friends. This may be the darkest of the books (despite the events later) because of the direct presentation of physical and psychological torture (at a junior level, nothing they can't handle). ( )

Couldn't put it down! Haddix moves her lens to Nina from the last book and into the Population Police's prison. Effectively explores issues of trust and betrayal in a way any reader can understand, and even makes the reader question the validity of circumstantial evidence. Highly recommended to middle school students who have read the first two. ( )

I'd definitely recommend this book to a friend. There are new character, settings, and a lot of suspense throughout the book. You have to read this if you have read the books before this. Good ending too, there's totally a twist at the end. 3Q3P The cover art is okay and I'd recommend this book to middle school students. I chose to read this book because I'd read the books that come before it in this series and they were great, like this one. NicS

I've heard the first 3 books are the best, so I'm hoping to like the next ones as well. ( )

This one annoyed me. I hated how they took the attention away from the "star" and completely refocused the saga, but by the end of the series, I was ok with that. It showcased how one person rarely makes a difference and true change is a collaborative effort without any kind of Christ-like savior. ( )

Independent Book Review: Among the Betrayed by: Margaret Peterson Haddix
I loved Among the Betrayed by Margaret Peterson Haddix. It’s one of those books that are very suspenseful and you can’t put it down. Not only was this book a great story, but it also gave you some information about the Population Police. The Population Police is a group of police that look for, arrest, interrogate, and execute third children. This book is the 3rd book in the Shadow Children sequence so you may like to read the first two books first, Among the Hidden and Among the Imposters. I also loved the first 2 books. Among the Betrayed is about a girl named Nina who is a third child and she lives at a school for kids that are different, called Hallows school for girls, she meets other third children there. One day she is arrested and thrown in the Population Police’s jail. But she isn’t arrested for what she thinks she is, being an illegal third child, but for treason. The Population Police say that she tried to turn in children that were not third children but she has no idea what they are talking about. Not only is she in jail, but she finds out her love betrayed her. On top of that the Population Police give her two options, betrayed 3 sweet little kids and others, or die. Nina is faced with a decision betray her own kind or be killed. What will she choose? What are the consequences? Well I can’t say you will have to find out. I thought this book was great and I encourage you to read it.

This book is a story told well. It is very interesting because there is always action and suspense. It is very detailed and you can picture the images in your head. I also "felt" the characters feelings because there are parts that are well described. ( )

This is book 3 of the shadow kid series. It was very interesting. Nina, a shadow child, gets arrested and then finds out to live she has to betray 3 little kids. Instead she takes the kids and escapes. With the constant fear of being captured, they hide. I think everyone will like this book. ( )
